Appearing broom

Postby MagicTom » Dec 20th, '05, 21:30

Ok, the reason i've submitted this reveiw here and not carried on from the review request is so that is seen as reveiw rather than answering a question. I did a search and the only one that mentioned the appearing broom was the request!

The Effect

The magician opens a box, briefcase or bag away from all tables or other supicious devices. Then, from inside, he removes a full-sized broom!
The broom does not telescope, as some DO suspect, but is actually produced from the container in a single, solid piece. (hard plastic)

There is nothing complicated about the production - just pull it out of any container.

Great for kids work especially!

Cost

£21.99 from "magic box"

Difficulty

Fairly easy. The difficult bit is removing a particular thing before pulling it out. (from inside the bag) I wll say no more.
However really easy and you should have no problems.
Some simple preparation is needed. (The night / day before) for best effect.

Review

I love this trick. As a kids entertainer its a great opener to the show. Straight away the kids have been baffled.
Its a very quick trick though. You must consider when buying. The effect only lasts 5 seconds and sometimes the audience misses it.

Zack, as a panto actor - this could be fab if they have the money to supply you with this.

For a magician - I would buy other favourable tricks before you purchase a trick like this.
I would rather have bought a longer lasting, small trick than buy this 5 second big prop! lol
Also - That is the only effect you can use with this trick. Once the broom is out the bag that trick is finished with, unless you have a whole show based on cleaning! lol

Overall
Its a great trick but dont buy this hoping it will use up time. It literally lasts 5 seconds.
However it does have a great opening effect. (especially on kids)
Personally i'd say its more for the kids entertainer than for the adult magician.

I've seen someone use it in combination with a card production act.
He pulled a lot of cards from the air, dropping them all on the floor. He had a lot of body loads with cards, so i think it might have been as much as 60 to 70 cards in total. To finish he produced the broom from a suitcase and used it to sweep all the cards away.

I think this item is best used in a way like that. Maybe to clean the stage after doing an effect with confetti or so.

Thats a great idea. Thanks for that.

Maybe its also a good finisher to a show! (Helps clean away in style)

Thanks,
Tom

Hi

Nice review.

I use the appearing pole which I believe works on the same principal in kids shoes and I find it blows the children away.

I tend to have a small brown bag containing the pole and I put a small brown wand like stick I have into the bag and add a little magic dust then remove the giant pole from the bag and the kids love it.

Maybe buy a dolls broom try and use it in front of the children to clean something up which I guarantee will get a laugh and then turn it into a huge broom as I am sure the kids would love this.

I have the Appearing Pole as well and it's a nice jokey item to use - the Monkey Magic guys pulled one out of a Coca Cola vending machine on one of their shows and it looked really good. The main thing which amused me was that the advertising blurb referred to it as the Appearing 10ft Pole but the instructions admitted that it was only 8ft. When I measured it I found it was only 7ft 3" - more like a Disappearing than Appearing Pole!

If we're honest we all exagerate the size of it sometimes ... dont we? :?

My Friend Zaz (Matt) used this once while i was whatching him perform for some kids at a BBQ, excelent gimmick ... if i ever got into kids entertainment it would be on my Must Have list i think.

Great review Tom,

Rob

Appearing pole

Postby MagicTom » Dec 21st, '05, 15:37

kwl. Thanks.

I saw papa from monkey magic perform live once. Unfortunatly he passed away but he was a fab magician / comedian / escape artist

Apparently there was a huge sale and remembrance thing at the magic cicle HQ - I think someone told me there were 3 tables full of handcuffs for sale or something like that!

I don't.

Thanks so much for the review, Tom - I'm gonna put a suggestion to the theatre group tonight about buying two - one for me, one for Cinderella. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Oh, and another wuestion that's occured to me, how solid is the broom once it's appeared? I know how it works, but I also know that some of the items that use the same method are quite, well, flimsy. Is the Appearing Broom solid and convincing as a broom?

ah yes!

Personally i dont think it looks realistic however i think it would be ok in a panotmime situation.

I'd rather it looked wooden.

It is quite solid - its not flimsy!

It wont flop over!

Just thought I would add the production method that I use, should anyone want a different presentation instead of just pulling it from a bag or case.
I use one of the larger cereal boxes to store the set up broom. On the offbeat I remark about the free gifts becoming larger and pull the broom from the box.
You could also have some cereal in the box which spills out when the broom is produced, then sweep them up with it.

There's also a version of the Pole decorated to look like a plastic drinking straw. If you pull one of those from a (clean!) McDonald's Milk Shake container it can raise a laugh or two. The routine goes along the lines of your assistant bringing in the container and complaining that someone forgot the straw, the magish then explains that sometimes the straws drop down into the container, removes lid, produces 8ft straw, takes bow, collects cheque, snogs leading lady, goes to pub or whatever.

Geofrey Durham uses one in his curent tour.
Its used as a filler, to clear up after his wonderfull performance of Harbins, "I'l do it again" rope trick.

you're like Yoda.you dont say much, but what you do say is worth listening to....

I like this idea! May think about using this one!

Thanks
