Boxing Day

Postby ace of kev » Dec 27th, '05, 01:04

Today I was at my aunties and all my family and distant family were there, a great chance to perform. Now, where do I begin :D

The feedback I was getting was absoloutely amazing! They said that they had seen (saw?) some magic on the TV and it was better than that, and they had seen (saw?) a magician table-hopping and he was no where near as good :D

I am so pleased :D I had to leave early as I had to see my girlfriend, but I have a feeling I might be getting invited to a few birthday parties as the entertainer :D

Oh, and I think with thoses comments, I have to change the bit at the side from AH to SH

Boxing Day is the day after Christmas Day and is technically the feast day of St. Stephen (as in the carol 'Good King Wencelas').

The term comes from a number of factors:

1. On St. Stephen's Day, collecting boxes for the poor were placed outside the church,

2. Some would have it that this was the day when the rich gentry would give staff the day off (eating cold turkey and pickle - hooray!) and would present them with a small gift in a box,

3. Panomines traditionally start their run on Boxing Day and the struggle for many to get a box in the theatre (that is a group of seats, usually in a good porition and isloated from the plebs) brought about the comment that they were looking to have a good box. This lkater became absorbed to boxing day.

So these are the three that I know of. Any additions?

Happy Christmnastide one and all,

Vic

Well done Kev, i also got round to presenting a few bits for the family ... worked a charm. Congratulations mate.

As for boxing day, i think Vic covered most angles ... i think the modern day meaning for my generation is getting all those unwanted gifts and "Boxing" them up to sell on e-bay

However, this year i came out trumps and didnt get any dud's ... all good gifts this year.

Absolutely nothing to do with pugilism unless you take into account the fights on the terraces as this is usually a day when football teams play local derbies (to reduce the amount of travelling required by the fans aparaently, not to ensure that boxing takes place :-) ).

Almost, but not quite. In areas were it is celebrated, it is still a statutory holiday. (So don't plan on getting mail or going to the bank!)

As an example, this year Christmas Day was on a Sunday and because the following day, Monday, was Boxing Day, we actually had an official public holiday for Christmas Day on Tuesday 27th December!
