Performing for groups

Postby Demitri » Jan 10th, '06, 08:29

Well, with the Superbowl coming up, I get my opportunity to do some magic during the neighborhood Superbowl party. Going through the old magic box, I'm finding a slight problem coming up.

While I can do walkaround-style and one-on-one stuff, there are many points where I'll be dealing with large groups of people at once (5-10 or more). While I have effects that involve 1 or 2 specs at a time, I don't know many effects that involve multiple spectators. So, I'm sending out a message in the hopes that my TM buddies can offer me a hand.

For an example - I'm thinking along the lines of Daryl's Group Sessions (one of my favorites). Thanks in advance!

You can perform pretty much the same stuff for 5 to 10 people as you can one on one. You just don't actively involve all the people at the same time. The key is to be aware of them and while you may be doing the work with one person (they hold the deck/coin etc) make sure you engage with all of them. Watch your angles, though.

After you have shown to one person, show to another. Do not always keep using the same person, its more fun to use different people :D

Bill Malone's "On the Loose" series has some excelent group effects ... like when does a lost and found card routine, with about 8 or 10 spectators ... they are in his pocket, under his cup, up his sleeve, in the kitchen sink, you get the idea lol.

I would reccomend that ... it is shot at the same location and even the same audience as Daryls Fooler Doolers.

Thanks for the comments.

Taneous - I try to do just as you said, but it's always good to be reminded of such things! And Kev, I always try to involve multiple spectators as I go along. However, I sometimes lose sight of that in "the moment", and I will keep your comments in my mind as I go.

I was just wondering if there were specific effects/routines that involved multiple spectators. For instance - the Group Session effect allows 5 spectators to actively participate.

Rob - do you happen to know which volume of On the Loose that effect is on?

Yeah, I did that at Christmas, and kept showing to the auntie nearest me, but then I moved round
