Hello to all!

It is a nice change to see a forum on which people seem focussed on the original questions posted!

My name is Dan and my curiosity has recently turned to magic/mentalism. My initial reasons for joining are to glean as much advice from the pros as possible, whilst adding my humble opinions and findings when I can. Hopefully as I gain knowledge and dare I say it “skill” I will be able to contribute more effectively.

I dabbled in what can “loosely” be described as tricks when my grandfather taught me as a child but I definitely couldn’t claim any mastery of the subject (nothing has changed!!). I recently sampled the delights of card sleights and basic handling through viewing Richard Kaufman’s Basic and Pass DVDs, together with a couple of routines taken from Jay Sankey. I can now perform, with varying degrees of success, a few basic card routines that seem to impress. However, and this would be my first request for advice, I am lacking a decent grounding in basic magic; that is I would like to learn basic terms and techniques (not just card magic) that will enable me to build from a good foundation. Can you recommend any reading material or indeed DVDs that will help me achieve this?

I would recommened the Royal Road to Card Magic as a beginner card book, but I'm not really sure about othere

Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic is goo for the basics in other subjects

Hi, and welcome to TM.

AS you've appeared to start off with a couple of DVD's and from what you tell us, have learn from them then I would personally stick to DVD's. There are a number of posts in the review and support sections that discuss and recommend beginner DVD's and I would recommend that you look these up.

There are also a number of posts on the Royal Road to Card Magic book, as well as the newly released DVD.

From personal expereince I don't recommend the book and from what I've read in reviews, I also wouldn't recommend the DVD.

I won't add anymore in this thread as there are various debates elsewhere and you'll pick up lots of other interesting information as you look around the site.

Hi there.

I Would have to agree Royal road for card magic. Jay sankeys revloutionary coin magic for coins and Snakeys anytime any where for genral everyday object magic plus Greg Wilsons on the spot. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your advice; I will start to trawl through the reviews and make my mind up on the next parchase. As a beginner I can also lend my thoughts as to how i found them
