What is it called?

Postby greedoniz » Jan 16th, '06, 15:43

I've seen on several occasions what is probably a rather famous trick but I have no idea what it is called so I cant track it down.
It involves four sugar cubes and as a hand obscures the cubes they hop positions until they end up under one hand....I think
Probably not the best description but I saw it done a year or two ago and my memory does require a restart sometimes.
While I'm here I might as well ask how difficult is it and how angle sensitive is it?

Usually, this effect is done with coins, and is known as a Matrix effect.

Search for 'Coin Matrix' on these forums...

I dont think it is the same as the coin matrix as I already do this. With this trick (it looks anyway) as if the sugar cubes aren't touched by the hand mearly hovers slighty above them.
I could be wrong but the coin matrix needs the coins to be covered by a playing card or a coverage of some sort.
Unless of course I dreamt this whole trick up but I seem to recall Paul Daniels doing it and making strange "biggledly bobbly" noises as they apprently jumped positions.

I think I'd better add that I think the Biggledy Bobbly noises are probably not core to the trick workings

hehehehehhe

Well, 'matrix' effects don't need to involve cards at all.

In fact, a lot of more credible matrix effects rely solely on the hands to do the work.

John Born (of Dean and Born fame( does a superb cardless matrix, in which his hands literally hover over the coins. It's gimmickless.

(See the Demo video at : http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=971 — I have this and it's superb)

I would imagine exactly the same principle is applied to the sugar cube version.

Unfortunately, what seems to have dulled people's creativity in the Matrix routines seems to be the gimmicked versions (Such as the 'Marvin's Magic' version).

You know what?

I'm so glad I happened upon this site. I've been scrambling around searching for things for ages and buying dissapointing magic but now I can ask people who know thier stuff.

I managed all that without swearing too

I have a book by Nick Einhorn called The Practical Encyclopeida that I got a couple of years ago before I really got into cards, and it has that effect and they call it Sugar Rush Uncovered. It is quite a good beginners book with lots of colour photographs!

You can get it here, but I'm sure you could find it elsewhere as I picked it up in a bookshop.

:D = A chink-a-chink routine is simply a bare-handed matrix

Yes, this site is full of helpful advice.

Chink-a-chink it is then.

:D

Now, I'm not sure where you'd get the routine (that version, in particular) without buying the whole DVD... but the entire DVD is actually brilliant value for money. Some great work on there.
