Shortlist recommendation:
1: RRTCM (Fundamental in card magic...)
2: Jay Sankey - 45 (Very cheap way to see how to implement and use RRTCM learning in a visual and useful way - plus coins, bill changes etc.
3: Ammar's Easy to Master series - teaches some excellent tricks and effects - notably some classics like Vernon's Twisting the Aces. A must.
4: Daryl's encyclopedia - minor overlap to Ammar, but sort of carries on and fills in where Ammar leaves off, IMHO
5: The best of Jay Sankey/Sankey's Secret Files - more handlings and creativity - usable card magic
6: Lennart Green's Green Magic - total purist magic - no gaffs or gimmicks - just regular cards doing amazing things
I'd pretty much recommend following that order, as in my opinion, all I had to go on when I started out was RRTCM.

This should get you deeply into just about all the sleights/utilities and also give you enough background to understand the 'lingo' and terminology. Also a good basis to learn about the men of the modern craft, like Marlo, Vernon, Hugard, Braue... and the rest!
Then, once you get deeper in, let your imagination take you where you want to go.!!!
