Self-Published Books?Advice?

Postby Jing » Jan 19th, '06, 14:53

Hey,
Presuming i have either,
a) gained permision to use an effect by it's creator / owner,
b) confident that the owner cannot be traced - i.e. standard moves / tricks dating too far back into history.
c) confident that the trick i've created is my own.

How feasible is it to self publish your own books?

I have books by Lewis Jones, and they all look pretty professional.

I'm not saying that I'm going to go out and do it right now, but if i had a selection of tried and tested tricks that would all fit under one category, and i wrote scripts for them, is there anything i would need to know?

Or would it be better to send off a script to a magic book publishers - such as?

As i say, this is only an idea at the moment, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ed.

Well, I am in the same position.

I've spent the best part of a year organising, writing, editing etc.

And my chosen option is: PDF delivery.

Instant, clean, eliminates print costs.

You can create the book at home, deliver it electronically. Sell it using a website.

You can email me for more info, if you like, and I'll give you an example.

Not saying it's ideal, but there's so much you THINK you have to think about, but it's actually quite easy.

If you want to publish a book, there are people who can produce them at a reasonable cost. You need to do a bit of research to find what is best for your needs. If it is just one effect, then you can easily do it yourself. If it is a book, you may find that it is cheaper then you first thought. You can also buy 10 isbn codes for about £50 which means your book is officially 'published' and can be sold on sites such as amazon if it proves to be succesfull.

This is fine but I think I would prefer having an actual booklet to show for my money if you see what I mean. It's just a psychological thing really. When you just get a virtual thing it doesn't feel real and so doesn't feel as worth it. I think you'd be best off offering both electronic copies and real books. Best to have a choice eh?

I think it depends on what is being written. If it's a small amount of text with pictures, explaining how to make a gimmick etc. then an instant download pdf is fine. If the book involves a lot of reading, then a physical thing is preferable.
