Which to buy? Hopping half or Butter coin?

Postby dave_100 » Jan 20th, '06, 16:11

Which has more of a wow factor?
Which is most examinable before and after?
Which is the gimmick less obvious?
Which is easier to carry round with you/ perform on the go?

Thanks for the help.

Which has more of a wow factor?
butter as hopping is pretty much a one trick pony.
Which is most examinable before and after?
neither.
Which is the gimmick less obvious?
both are unoticeable when handled correctly.
Which is easier to carry round with you/ perform on the go?
butter as its only one coin but only by that vertue.

I'd say that the only advantage, and albeit slight is that with the hopping halves you're left empty handed so in theory there isn't anything left to examine.

With the butter coin there are a few routines, such as coin through table that relies on you using misdirection to switch the coins (which is fairly easy to do by the way) so you can always hand out the switched coin for examination. However, routines such as rub away coin and restore will not leave you empty handed and you'll then find that the specs want to handle the coin so your switch will need to be invisible which isn't so easy if you're a beginner (although practice will resolve this but take some time).

As magicdoscoman states, if performed well then both are un-noticeable although in my opinion, specs scrutinise and have their own theories with all coin tricks. Not saying that they're right though.

From the two, my own personal favourite is the hopping halves.

thanks for the help.

why are neither examinable? (obviously you cant give the secret, just say whether and WHEN the gimmick is gonna show if examined)

which has the best longevity? i dont wanna be buying elastic bands every week etc, i want something with all the bits, thatll last for a long time.

They cannot be examined because of the gimmick on both (obviously totally different gimmicks), this will be obvious if handled by the spec in both cases. I'll say no more on this.

If ordering the hopping halves then be aware that one real coin is needed and often this is not supplied so must then be bought separately. I have the hopping halves sun & moon which is an old English penny and an American quarter dollar. However, it didn't come with the ungimmicked dollar. Although this isn't expensive (about £1), you usually then have a few more days to wait for the post to arrive after the second order so make sure that you check and order at the same time if necessary.

As stated, in my opinion the hopping halves is a better routine but it's one routine whereas the butter coin can be used in a number of differenr routines. You may find youself buying both!

Both will have longevity if taken care of but there will be some re-banding with the butter coin and although bands are inexpensive they are fiddly, particularly if they snap mid-performance.

If used regularly I would anticpate changing bands about three times a year. Depends on how frequently used and because rubber will perish and lose it's elasticity

I don't know the chinese bit so can't comment.

Another that may interest you which is a real classic is a coin unique. Use the search function to find out more. It's probably the only one of the four that many of the Pro's will use yet very easy to do.

it's self working so this leaves you to concentrate on he presentation but you MUST make sure that you buy a quality copy as the difference will be obvious. These will pass as REAL coins even when handled by the spec.

If you can, go for an Eddie Gibson coin unique but this will usually cost around £28. Highly recommended!

If you want to go with Butter Coin, I would advise you to go to a brick and mortar magic shop and check it out, personally.

I've heard many complaints about the Butter Coin - the general consensus being that the production quality was really unbalanced - with some coins being perfect, others being very poorly made.

Mind you, this issue may have been resolved with later production runs.

Can you post a link to the 'Chinese Bit' that you're looking at? This may help!

As dimitri has recommended I'd agree that it's always better to go to a brick & mortar shop but sometimes it's not practical.

I have a butter coin 10 pence version and I'd probably rate it as acceptable. I've heard that the US quarter version is much better 'cut' than the 10 pence version but then it's a bigger and thicker coin. Saying that, I've NEVER had it spotted when I've used it.

I got 10p version some time ago from Magictricks.co.uk but having just checked they don't appear to stock it any more.

I believe the I can't believe it's not butter version is spread across a number of dealers
