Need help with classic palm

Postby SpongeBallSlight-of-hand » Feb 1st, '06, 04:30

I can't do the classic palm. It's so hard. Here's how you do it:

1) Hold the quarter between your thumb and put it on your middle finger. Gently hold the quater by your thumb.
2) Bring the quarter into your palm and gently hold it and grip it with your thumb muscle and hand muscle.
3) Don't cramp your hand too mcuh, or it will look unnatural and tense.

This is in my opinion the hardest slighet to do. It is incredibly hard. I've tried it for along time. I've heard these are one ways you can do it:
1) Tape it to your hand
2) Hold it constantly in that position, 24 hours a day.

Whenever I try to hold it, no matter how light or hand, my hand becomes tense and cramped.

I"m very good withs ponge ball magic but this is very difficult.

http://www.coinvanish.com/ click on foundations and answer basic coin question for pics and practise notes on classic palm.
also try using a much larger coin like a half first to find the right spot, a quater will make your hand look odd untill you have built up sufficiant mussle.

Sponge Ball Slight Of Hand - it's well worth using the search function at the top of every TalkMagic page before asking questions - you never know if what you want to know has already been covered.

Also, on a minor point, it's 'sleight,' not 'slight.' Well done for having done it for 8 years, though...

I am a 33 year old 'desk jockey', slightly chubby round the midrift (through enjoying the bounty offered by publicans everywhere since my college days), and relatively inactive during winter. My day job dictates an 8am start, from which point I sit for 4 hours in front of two monitors, then a 3/4 hour break, back to the screens and finally home around 7.30pm.

By this point, I love to sit down, read the papers, eat my meal and sup some wine. Then, usually a quick natter with her indoors before leaping upstairs to sit in front of a monitor again. Then, bed.

Inactive? Yep. In winter, this is true. I'm a wimp when it comes to miserable damp cold days and early dark nights.

But... Come spring—and the nicer weather and lighter nights, I am a keen mountain biker and golfer. Couldn't want to spend more time outdoors if I tried.

But, for the first month or so, my back aches after playing golf—often I get a muscle strain in my elbow, and my swing is stiff.

My mountain biking, for the first few weeks, is labourious, almost painful. I tire quickly, I have no stamina.

But by around April, I am back in full swing... fitter, stronger, more stamina and generally more supple and full of verve.

The moral of this tale?
Take this simple equation:
(A+B+X+Y)-D=Z

Now, assume that Z = 'Result'.
X = 'Hard work' and Y = 'Perseverance'. A = 'Knowledge' and B = 'Motivation'.

D = 'Negativity'.

By gosh, I've just invented the root equation at the heart of all magic!

Sounded like and introduction for a minute there Seige

Sponge - you have to sow the seeds to reap the rewards.

With you having spent the past six years working on sponge balls and little else, I'd recommend that you forget sponges for the time being and concentrate purely on another form of magic, perhaps going back to the sponges only once of twice each fortnight.

If you spend a couple of hours each day for say five or six days each week then your knowledge and skills will quickly improve within a month or two.

Thanks, mate.

I collect coins, (I'm a numismatist) for years. I have plenty of them :)

How do I answer the questions when I don't have the video?

Hehe

Oh, and whats a fortnight? I'm a yank, ya know ;)

I was reading some british book and it said a fortnight is every 2 weeks.

Thanks

Thanks, I'll try that.

Remember, I'm new to coin slights. I don't know what he is doing with holding the coin on his backhand (side of hand), this isn't called backhand.

What is it?

Hey! You can't ask questions like that!

Coinvanish.com is designed as a brush-up course and accompaniment to people learning coin magic.

It's not designed for people who want to learn ONE effect.

It would be unethical for someone to give you the answer, because the question is designed to weed out timewasters and leechers.

Please, take some time to try and show a little dedication here. Magic is something that people are very precious and passionate about, especially when it comes to sharing secrets.

Well considering I just practiced coin across and the coin roll for several days now (Actually months, to mastedr it), and yesterday alone I practiced it at night for 6+ hours (The coin across, to get the classic palm right) I think I do have a passion for it, thank you very much.

I'm not just trying to learn one trick. Like others have said, I've practiced slight of hand with sponge balls my whole life. I am practicing mastering the classic palm.

I almost got it. My hand doesn't look EXACTLY right but its still just a tad unnatural. But I still need my other hand to put it in this positiojn. I need to practice it more. I'll take a picture and show you.

I've been doing this consistantly for years.

I think you misunderstood me. I don't want to learn it just for one effect (the classic palm) I want to use it to be able to master the classic palm, to do other tricks like coin across better.

I'm just as passionate about magic as any other person, if not more so. I practice just as much as you, or anyone else here.

Are you talking about the coin roll? (Making it roll from one knuckle to another, then catching it with your thumb, and repeating)

I have several sponge books, including that one by Mark Will, and a videos, and a few others.

If it's something else, when I think of backpalm I think of this:

Thumb palming a coin between your fingers, so when you turn your hand over it looks empty.

Never even knew this existed for sponge magic.

Hey, I'll take a picture of my classic palm soon and show you guys. I need some advice on it. I think it looks good though.

If you really want to get good at your classic palm then I suggest whenever you have free time, whether it be in class, down-time at work or just watching TV that you practice palming that coin. It works
