The Stickman

Postby Slyszer » Feb 10th, '06, 08:38

Hello all, here I go again ;)

I saw this effect on a Richard Sanders DVD, and I really liked it.
So here it is, my amateur version of 'The Stickman'.

The Stickman

(Buffering can take a while, the file is about 16 MB.)

This is a nice effect. I wasn't aware that Richard Sanders had a version of this. There's a marketed effect out there called Stickman Sam which looks identical to this one.

You performed the effect well. Your shuffle was nice - even and clean - which is all you can ask for. Overall, the effect was performed well. Good job.

Just a few notes -

Try working on your DL. Some of your get ready moves were very "open" which would make them highly suspect. Perhaps look into a strike DL. It takes a little practice to get down, but it's a REALLY convincing move.

Your second change was noticeable, as the deck wasn't completely turned over while you made the move. This may be as a result of performing so close to a table (a simple wrist kill can cover moves like this easily).

Just a tiny comment on the erdnase - and this is something that most specs probably wouldn't catch. The fact that you had to square the card again can make someone wonder what happened. Just a tiny adjustment and it's clean.

You might want to look into the effect I mentioned above. The "change" is handled differently - and it might give you some nice ideas for a variation. Great job.

Yes, I agree the get ready is not good at all, but then again, I usually perform for laymen, and I gesture to rub on the Stickman to cover the push over get-ready.

The erdnase change does not look good either, I know, but so does the spread at the end... I am quite satisfied with the result.
(Ok, I just didn't want to record the whole movie again and waste cards :P)

Another way to do this effect which is very convincing is to have the stickman already drawn on the selected card before the effect starts. Then, force the Stickman card and have the face signed. The convincer here is that using a DL, the spectator sees a blank back on their card, and the card can be placed in front of them the whole time.

Then, proceed with the rest of the effect—doing an Erdnase colour change to rub the stickman off the card. Under a storyline of "He loves finding spectator's cards, bless him."

Of course, they will marvel at delight when their signed card which has been in their possession the whole time has the stickman on the back.

Not as clean, as you have to hide the duped stickman in the deck at the end, but it's a good variation.

That indeed sounds like a nice variation. But when the spectator holds the card, they might want to turn it over because they always want to see both sides of the card when you start to draw someting on the back of another card. This because the suspect something.

Also when I perfom this effect for a spectator, I let them draw something on/next to the stickman that 'helps' him find the card. This way they know I cannot have a duplicate stickman.

When giving a spectator a card, always ask them to keep their hand palm down, flat on the card. This stops them looking at the back.

YOU control the spectator's with any effect, not the other way round ;)

You're right Seige, but I think it takes away a little of the effect when the spectator cannot or will not see the back of their card before the trick is done.

I think it is cleaner to let them pick a card, sign it, show both sides, then loose it in the deck (that's what they think) and then draw the stickman on 'another' card, it give a good illusion...

Well, that's just my two cents ;)
