One Handed Top Palm

Postby pdjamez » Feb 25th, '06, 23:40

Did a search, but was surprised that there didn't seem to be discussion on this, anyway...

I've been top palming for years, but I can't seem to get the One Handed Top Palm down.
The back left corner is jamming on my right thumb and then the card flys out to the right. I have managed to reduce the exposed angle during the last few practise session, but thats pretty much it. I can't help but think I'm missing something critical here.

Any advice, gratefully received.

Hmm...I had this problem too and I'm still not quite sure how I solved it. It's all in the pinkie action, so if it's not working try to do it as slowly as you can to see where it goes wrong. Remember, you want to push the outer corner of the card forward then down. If you forget the down part, the card won't lift up into your palm. Also, try straightening your other fingers slightly so as to provide more area to 'catch' the card as you palm it.

Also, don't worry too much about exposed angle (although that doesn't mean forget about it either :)) as the beauty of the one-handed top palm is that it can be done under the cover of misdirection and the audience will never suspect a thing. It's like a pass in that regard, except you have one hand free to gesture with etc.

Kati

P.S. I'm not sure if you have Born to Perform but there's a decent explanation on there with several views.

In hibernation but half awake - will stick my nose in every so often!

Kat, thanks for the advice, I especially liked the 'Born To Perform' reference (or do I mean reverence). :D I wasn't clear when I said "exposed angle", what I meant was the exposed bottom right corner of the card, as it swings right. I have reduced the angle of this exposed part of the card. Not enough though...

I'll try your advice over the next few sessions and see if I can get it. I'll also take a look and see if Mr Pearlman can cast some light on the issue.

Mucho Thanks

Sorted. Thanks Kat. The problem wasn't with my pinkie but oddly with my ring finger. Nuff said.
