I don't know what it is about this deal but I spent ages not being able to do it and every time I tried it felt like the cards were just slicing into my little finger which was rather painful. However, one day I tried it and I was suddenly able to do it. Admittedly not perfect but the basic technique was there for me to build upon.
Here are a few tips I can offer of things I have found in developing my technique for this:
1) Experiment with the area of your little finger which acts as the stop. Certain parts of your finger will hurt ALOT and others will be more comfortable. Try a few different parts of the finger and see what is most comfortable for you.
2) When you are using your thumb to pull back the card you should experiment with how hard you press down on the card in order to get it to slide back. Start off by pressing down quite hard and see how poor the results are when you want the card to shoot back out. I don't know why this makes a difference but you will get much smoother looking results if you can find the middle ground between squeezing the life out of the card between the thumb and the rest of the deck and your touch being too light to grip the card.
3) Finally, since the deck is held in a modified mechanics grip the three unused fingers of the left hand are along the right hand side of the deck. You need to keep these as much out of the way as possible. When I do it my fingers aren't even gripping the deck. The deck rests on the crease at the last knuckle at the end of my fingers and the ends of my fingers curl up slightly to give the deck stability. They do not GRIP the deck. If you try it with the fingers gripping the deck you will firstly find it difficult to pull back the card you want to deal, and secondly, the card will not spring off the deck properly.
4) If the tips above and the original source of learning have still not got you doing it properly, don't keep trying and failing to the point of frustration. I found that learning to do this move was similar to learning the erdnase colour change. Whenever I tried it just wasn't possible. I couldn't do it. I wouldn't sit down for an hour and work on it as I couldn't see it being any use. I would just try it every now and then as I know how the technique is meant to be done - I just can't do it. Eventually you will find that from nowhere the basic technique has just appeared. There will probably be no "almost got it" moments with this move. It will just come to you one day if you just try it for a minute or two a day. It's a much nicer way to learn than getting all bothered over something you can't do, why bother with that when a "Bullet Deal" (I prefer this name of all those suggested) isn't an essential sleight like a DL.
Hope this can be of some use to you.
