Postby Medeiros66 » Mar 9th, '06, 13:23

Hi.
After using search function, withouth success, I’d like to know if somebody has a link to any close-up table plan that I can guide to built it myself.
Thank you.

Do you mean a table with built in gimmicks, black art, servantes - that kind of thing?

Close-up table plan

Postby DrTodd » Mar 9th, '06, 13:30

I think Mark Wilson has one in his book. I am building one at the moment, which will be done in an antique teak finish with brass hinges and brass handles. Three shelves inside, wheels on the bottom. I don't the commercially available ones (pricey and tacky).

go to the second hand shop and buy a bedside cabinet around £5 add planter wheels to the bottom £5 - £8 and a matt to the top £2 - £5.

you then have a close up table with a draw which can be used as a servant as well as a storage area and a cupboard in the bottom or shelves for your other stuff all for around £15.

I have already a Black Art Table Top (the smaller one) and his tripod. I have also a black velvet pad. What I mean is a dedicated close-up table w/ a bigger surface (covered w/ velvet or other appropriated tissue) and a servant, at least.
My father is a craftsman and I have some facilities to build something good.

DrTodd:
I’m waiting for Mark Wilson’s – it will arrive soon from USA.

Magicdiscoman:
That’s a good inexpensive solution but, IMHO, to low for standing work and without accommodations for legs if you’re talking about seating performance.

Thank you for your quick reply.

magic table

Postby DrTodd » Mar 10th, '06, 20:37

Mine will have three sides that fold up, three removable shelves, and a detachable top, as well as wheels on the bottom. The other solution is to find an antique gramaphone stand, and use the back of it as the front of your stand. Most of these come with a drawer and folding doors, etc. They are very heavy to move about though. I like something sturdy and I find that many of the plans do not have enough rigidity factored in...

I made a table a few years back that was basically a box three feet high with a removable back. It had three flaps which folded up from the top and nested into groves from the back which became the performing surface. It cost me a couple of sheets of plywood, a tin of paint and a couple of afternoon's work but did require some careful planning and measuring so that the flaps lay flat but folded up to the same height.

I don't think that it should be hard to design something yourself if you have the right tools to build it.

ah yes i forgot to mention that the wheels on the mark 2 version were a small cabinet that housed an amp and radio setup, origionaly an ottaman or blanket box with wheels.
the lid was taken off and attached to the bedside cabinet by metal clips like you get on tool boxes so bumped the whole price up to £25 but then comes apart to fit in a car.

most magic tables in books for building involve a hindged panel for the legs with a table top attached by hooks and eyes or thouse hindges with removable pins.

thease days of mfi and fiberboard paint it your self units its possible to make up a sectional box arrangement with a cupbaord on wheels for keeping your stuff in will you travel and attached to that a set of shelves an an optional draw unit like a knife draw as a top if you dont use the top of the shelving unit, decorated as required.

if you just need a table then you can use the jacobs lader format forr the base and a top as desired, which will fold flat for traveling.

Not sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for, but

Hope that helps.
