The new guy's dumb question.

Postby CutToTheAce » Mar 8th, '06, 11:24

hi.
Looks like i've found a pretty good forum here.
Just one thing I'm not getting; I'm a mentalist, so obvouusly i'd like to gain access to the mentalism section, no rush, have all the patience in the world, happy to post all sorts of helpful and informative mentalism information in order to build my reputation...but where to?.
As far as i can tell the mentalism section appears totally self contained and locked, how can i therefore "show a basic knowledge of Mentalism together with quality contributions"?
I'm probably just missing something staring me in the face.

Thanks in advance,

The Mods will be here soon to explain this better, but for now...
They send out invitations to join every so often. Posts like good quality reviews, contributions to discussions, maybe offering good advice to beginners etc will all help. It is not the number of posts you make but the quality.

Having a gotee really helps..

But if you don't want to grow one then post some reviews, or start athread with mentalism in mind and see where it goes. In what context do you perform mentalism?

nothing to do with your face fitting at all, what a stupid comment to make.

Its true that the mentalism section is "locked" but its only locked in the same way that the "secrets" section is locked and as such invitations are sent out to people who show a genuine interest in this particular genre coupled with a healthy numberof quality posts on the subject

Steve, I actually find that dismissive comment to be very offensive and unworthy of you especially in a thread from a newcomer asking an understandable question. Also it is completely without foundation. There is no 'face fitting' on TM, never has been and never will be. As you know very well, the process of extending invitations to the Restricted Areas is long established and based on many aspects, all of which are clearly explained at the start of the sections.

The answer to your question, CutToTheAce, is that we have certainly taken note of your stated interest in Mentalism and we do our best to consider all members as often as we can. Helpful contributions to threads, new reviews or additions to existing reviews and comments all help to give an overall picture to work on. We have a fairly easygoing Forum but it's based on courtesy and consideration for others even where we disagree with each other. I hope that helps with your question!

If the requirements to get into the Mentalist section are just the same to get into the usual restricted section, how come its labelled as 'Very restricted'? Is that just due to the nature of its content? Or do you have to prove your worth as a mentalist by correctly reading the mind of the server to get a secret password? By the way, im not a mentalist, these are just questions that i thought somebody might want to know. Apart from the last one, that was just a joke. :)

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...

'Very Restricted' is perhaps little bit tongue in cheek but the main aspect is that the Mentalists Only Area and Magicians Only Area are not linked - access to one doesn't automatically mean access to the other. We were hesitant in setting up the Mentalists Only Area in the first place as attempts at this sort of thing elsewhere led to a lot of argy bargy and upset. So far it seems to have gone OK here but the accessibilty is tightly controlled and for very good reasons!

@CutToTheAce: don't worry about the special locked areas of TM...show some knowledge, share your knowledge, be friendly and it will be rewarded for sure...TM is a great place and Mods are more than fair...

Thanks for all the responses.
I can do friendly and helpful:). i'll keep an eye out for mentalism questions, and if that fails i will use my vast mental powers to make people ask them :). Failing that i'll answer a few magic questions (as long as they are about the 50 odd tricks i know:) )

As for the goatee, sadly i just can't seem to manage it, but i compensate with EXTRA BLACK clothing:)

Someone asked in what context i perform mentalism, i read this as asking whether i am a stage style mentalist, or one of the types of reader types mentioned in your rules in the mentalism section. I am a brand new stage mentalist, not in terms of learning but in terms of performing, i've done a few shows, nothing fortune teller/mysticy at all, my only crime may be being a bit too Derren-ish, I'm working on it but I'm just kinda Derren-like generally, though I'm adding more humour into my act to try and stand out.
Nothing totally original in the act as yet, but work by or inspired by osterlind, cassidy, nyman, jermay, hilford, earle, goldstein.....(doh! there are at least another 30 names in my head, i was going to try sneaking in a demonstration of knowledge into this description of what i do but my minds gone irritatingly blank:).

look forward to many more postings almost as semicoherent and rambly as this one.

I second that. I am also a member of the magicbunny forum (as are many of the members here) and have been since december. However, in that time i've only made 23 posts (to date). Where as here i've made over 300 since October. This is because at magic bunny I don't feel like part of the community, here I do. I like the way things are run here and enjoy being a part of this forum. Long may I continue to do so.
