Can anybody recommend a mentalism trick that has a stunning effect but it simple enough for a beginner to do?
Am new to magic as I want to incorporate it in to my full time prainers job and have bought a few mentalism tricks recently but some are more dissapointing than others -before I waste any more money can someone recommend a really good stunning mentalism trick that is simple to perform

Have a look at the Design Duplication System by Richard Osterlind. I've often thought next time I do any training and need an icebreaker I'd get 2 flip charts at opposite sides of a room and give it a whirl.

It requires a bit of memory work but you shouldn't find it too taxing.

You could also try Thought Transmitter by John Cornelius which is dead easy to do:

Why would someone recommend material of that sort to an admitted novice?

Linda, given that you are new to it all, I would recommend getting something along the lines of the Mark Wilson or Tarbell magic courses. They are filled with all sorts of magic including some basic mental magic routines that are easy enough to learn. In short, you'll get far more for the money ventured.

Unlike Magic, Mentalism is more dependent upon your ability to present a mystery vs. a trick. If it is something that honestly interest you then (after you've started with one or both of the above sources) you can move into the introductory books on the subject like Annemann's Practical Mental Magic and Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism but take it slow, and know that the real magic happens through you and has little to nothing to do with the effect or method.

i reccommend ESPerfect by alakazam magic, this one amazes people. Its about £10 i think

There's also "Self Working Mental Magic" by Karl Fulves. It's suitable for a beginner, but it has some nice effects.

'Knock 'em Dead' also done by Alakazam. Sure fire winner and really easy to do!! Retails once again at about 10 quid!! I still occasionally take this one out to play and it slays people!!

Whatever you buy though, remember that 95% of a mentalism effect is in the presentation of it. It would be nice to know what effects you have already bought as chances are a few tips from people on here might be able to improve what you are already doing!

ID i bought it a few day ago and havent put it down makes you look like a real pro and is easy to do once the simple structure becomes apparent

I recommend 13 steps to mentalism, it has absolutely everything you will ever require for performing emntalism, whether its one to one or for audiences of many.

It's the bible of mentalists.

There's a coin trick on Jay Sankey's 22 blows to the head, very simple to do yet i still use it regularly because i never fail to be surprised by the reaction, actually quite annoying considering how advanced the rest of my stuff is:). Can't remember what its called but its the only coin trick on the dvd, and some of the stuff other stuff on the disk might be good for a magic leaning beginner

Since you asked for a specific trick I would recommend the "Knock 'Em Dead" (Demo Video)(World Of Magic - £10.45, Alakazam - £12.50, I'll let you choose).

Even better than Knock 'Em Dead in my opinion is Jay Sankey's Astral Projection. Knock 'Em Dead is great and will really hit people hard but if you want to SLAY people try this.

Also, if you do want something other than a single trick and wish to venture on to a DVD then I would check out Jay Sankey's 22 Blows To The Head. It's full of novel mentalism ideas that should not be underestimated in the mind of the lay person.
