Help with abbreviations!

Postby EckoZero » Mar 25th, '06, 21:05

Don't know if this is the right place to be... but

I'm new to magic, only been doing it for about 2 months or so and I come on here and you're all great and really helpful but I get confused sometimes with the abbreviations you use!

Any posting of what common abbreviations mean would be greatly helpful!

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

You will find that sometimes we use abb because we are discussing a sleight or gimmick. As this is an open forum people tend to do that. Sometimes things with long names are abbreviated. For example we may call 'the royal road to card magic' RRTCM, or ID may be called ID.

the classic one we use is C.U.P.S when we use that we mean we have purchased something we don't need but could not resist. Hope that helps a bit

You can expect to pick up the meaning of abbreviations quite quickly, but they do look a bit confusing to start off with. As Stephen says, some refer to gimmicks or sleights that would be spoilt if anyone used their full names in the open forum, like IT for instance. Don't worry, though. If it's a thread about, say, a deck and someone mentions the ID, it's fairly clear from the context once you get going. It just helps keep casual browsers off the scent.

The one that causes most problems for people is CUPS - Compulsive Unnecessary Purchasing Syndrome. You go to an online magic shop with half an hour to waste and with absolutely no intention of buying anything at all, but come away with an empty credit card... again!

Sorry Tomo but someone's bound to say it:

Its Compulsive Uncontrollable Purchasing Syndrome.

Not Unnecessary

Thanks for the help guys!
I seem to be picking up on them fairly well now... still a couple that confuse me. If they're not giving too much, whats a TT? :?

But I'm sure I'll be able to grab a few more of them now!

Thanks again guys

No purchase is unnecessary - if it were unnecessary then there wouldn't be a problem :).

It is Unnecessary...

Indeed it is. Certainly in the original message. I appreciate that many people prefer to use "uncontrollable", which is also fine, it still describes the CUPS addiction quite nicely, However, these people who wish to change it to uncontrollable are probably the worst of the CUPS sufferers as they are still in denial.

No purchase is unnecessary - if it were unnecessary then there wouldn't be a problem

This is a statement by someone who still suffers quite badly from CUPS.

You see in my mind, most of the purchases that CUPS sufferers make do NOT go into their working repetoires and probably do not get used more than a handful of times. To my mind (at the price of magic today), this makes these purchase unnecessary. More to satisfy the burning curiosity as to how it was done than anything else.

So Uncontrollable - yes, for sure. No one is denying that, but when you start to admit it was Unnesseccary, then maybe that is the first step to salvation...

Kati... I think you're still in denial that you're a CUPS sufferer ;)

The original was 'unnecessary'... implying that you will by something under total compuslion, but not really need.

The fact that most things that blokes buy are not really needed (for instance: place a 30 yr old male in the local £1 shop with £5 in his pocket, and tell me he won't buy a magnifying-glass-come-pencilcase or somesuch daft thing).

Therefore, CUPS is indeed a description of impulsive buying of unnecessary magical items. But also applies to Rolson cheap tools ;)

I'm compelled to say "unnecessary" makes more sense - if it's compulsive, it's uncontrollable anyway so one of those words would be unnecesssary.
Hope that's clear.

Good point there, Silkenone. Kinda like when people say PIN number. Which is Personal Identification Number Number.

I agree with the "Unnecessary" application too. I have bought many things I will likely never use again.

There's no such thing as CUPS! I just like to buy stuff...now, there was that Cups and Balls DVD, I've always wanted to learn C&B; and who could resist a C/S/B coin set if I already have a brilliant routine for it - ahem. :D

:D:D:D Our local petrol stations now have a stand of cheap stuff right next to the till, just where you can see that you can buy a new magnetic flashlight with a magnifying glass for just £2.99!

Ha! :D We have one of those at the petrol station where I work.

Every now and then we'll get some cheap rubbish that we put right next to the till that will ALWAYS sell... regardless of how dodgy it is!!

And yes, I have to agree - most of mens purchases are completely unnecessary. Just last week I bought an ashtray that you push down on the top and the ash swirls away into the bottom just like when you flush the loo. I chose to ignore the fact I already have 5 ashtrays in my room, one in the kitchen and 3 in the living room...
