How do you know what's real and what isn’t?

Postby Sky321 » Mar 26th, '06, 18:22

i have seen some pretty crazy things on tv but how much of what you see is really reality? walking up the side of buildings? turning coffee into insects, making cards float in mid air, driving on a busy road when you cant see, being put inside a bin then vanishing onto a top of a building

how do you distinguish?

Thanks

If it's in a documentary it's real... If it's in a Spiderman movie it's a special effect... If it's in a cartoon it's animated... If it's in a soap opera it's definately gritty real life... If it's on a magic show it's all reality, what you mean you can't turn your mochachino into ladybirds while taking a stroll up the side of Big Ben? Everyone else does it all the time...
(then again that could just be my medication talking) :D

Everything you're describing is a MAGIC TRICK... none of it is "real"

A person on their death bed covered in KS blotches that suddenly has them all vanish and their health fully restored... that's real and what most would call a "miracle".

Now many years I had an old Druid tell me that all "magick" happens by way of natural law and natural means... in other words, it's all an aspect of science (physics, chemistry & math) so, let this old Druid tell you the same thing.... there is a trick to it all even when it seems to be unexplainable and surreal.

Dont' get me wrong, I'm a confirmed believer in magick and miracles as well as the power of prayer and positive consciousness. In short, I'm a skeptic or more accurately a "realist" but I'm not a cynic -- I know things are always just black & white. But, even from the mystical/occult point of view what I've said in the above remains completely true... this is one of those "deep mysteries" of occult-lore.

I hope I've not confounded your considerations but helped you better contemplate the greater truth of it all.

It's all magic until you pay your money and find out how it's actually done.

Usually you're disapointed in one way or another by just how easily you've been fooled - either by the simplicity of a great effect or fooled out of your money.

i don’t know if anyone has seen it or not but most of what i am referring too is on
criss angels mindfreak show. now what i am yet to understand is when he performs all of this so called magic in front of these people on the streets you should see there faces they really are amazed its like they cant believe what they just saw. i did hear that they edit the videos and put him back in another scene but that’s only what i have heard how ever done it's amazing. he goes up to people and can read there minds and everything i just wonder if these people are in on it or he really can guess what your thinking? he levitates people in a park then puts a stick all around them and underneath to prove nothings holding them up

so there you have it real or not?

That's the purpose of what he's doing my friend... to amaze and amuse folks.

Criss has been working at this stuff for a very long time. I can assure you however, anyone can do it if they invest the time into study and practice.

The levitation is a commercial prop and trust me, there is something holder the participant in the air and chances are very good that he didn't pick just any random person, he used a trained assistant.

Based on your enthusiasm and curiosity I'm betting you've not seen many magic shows on Tv or live let alone done any research on this topic e.g. I would say you need to crack a few books and educate yourself a bit. I'd bet your local library has several basic books on magic that could help you see just how easy it is to accomplish some of these things. I'll not recommend you do too much web surfing in that there are certain people that do not respect magic and openly give away secrets. This is not a good thing in our eyes. Magic is very special and must be protected so that others have the same amazment in their lives as you are presently feeling over Criss's shows.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the larger scaled Illusions, like the levitation, are bloody expensive. Even a "cheap" levitation now days retails for around $600.00 to $800.00 and the upper-end versions (and we're not talking about things like how Criss Walks Up a Wall or the Copperfield FLYING system) come in at between $10,000.00 and as much as $35,000.00 depending on which system you are investing in and who the builder is. In many instances once you own the prop you need to invest another $5,000.00 or more for sets, costums and everything else that supports that one piece in your show.

In Criss's up-coming show he does several unique routines such as turning water into beer (real beer) using the same gimmick though the effects are different. The device in question cost nearly $2,000.00 and is kept ultra-secret because of how flexible it is when it comes to application and the fact that the few performers that will be allowed to own it, are assured a kindof "exclusivity"... in short, this prevents all the wannabe types from knowing the full scope of the secret... there's a lot of magic out there that is sold this way. It's what allows magicians to be spellbound every now and then.

Do yourself a favor and track down videos of other performers so you can see how audiences react and why. Know however, that it's all a trick and has a very logical (sometimes criminally simple) explanation in how they work.

Enjoy the journey!

To make it easy, if someone is walking up a building wall, it's not real ;)

A Sherlock Holmes quote:

...when you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

That usually does it for me ;)

...may i add that on a wider scale, if you believe something is true - then it is...

from religion to if we went to the moon or not - it's down to you what you believe is true...

i think there are very few absolute truths in this world...

i personally believe that bruce forsyth's hair has actually grown back from his balding 70s hay-day (or should that be hair-day) through his belief that if he tap-danced enough it would force his follicles to re-sprout...

Angel ahs more cuts than a cut kiddy on heat. It's impossible to tell which ones he does are genuine and which are "enhanced" by stooges and editing.

If you're buying Mindfreak to try and learn magic from then you're wasting your money!

Buy it for the entertainmant value and perhaps some ideas on presentation, although Angels presentation is pretty much unique.

They will have made pretty damn sure that ANY clips that even 'sniff' at revealing will be on the cutting room floor. I've watched the first DVD and it's pretty slick production and editing.

i think

"it's a zen thing"
