Most music software has a steep learning curve.

A very close friend of mine runs a recording studio, and his software of choice is Cubase. I think the big boys toys are Cubase, Logic Audio and ProTools.

Most of these involve audio/midi sequencing, effects and mastering.

However, there are plenty of other 'sequencing' software packages available which allow you to compose, synthesize and write music—some of which is shareware.

Depends what your buddy is doing: composing, sequencing or notation.

Have a look here:

If he is 'writing' music then he might want to look at Emagic's Notator Logic. This is the industry standard for musicians. It also lets you print all the music out with about 16 instrument parts if I remember rightly. It has been a long time since I used it though!!

Most of the aforemention programs are primarily sequencers/virtual studios.
You'd be paying a lot of money for technology you won't need.

For notation the industry standard is Sibelius, with Finale a good second place.

You can download a free version of Finale Notepad HERE.
