What do u all think of the three card trick that Derren did to Matt Lucas on Sunday night's show?

Very well presented indeed and a very strong effect I thought.

I loved it :D

I can think of how he did half of it... just not the rest lol

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

Which part?

The whole trick as performed is bespoke, I'd have thought, but if you have enough time, you could reverse engineer it to use either sleights or a gimmicked deck up to the trance at the start.

Given the "no stooges" rule at the start and if the trance is therefore real and unscripted, it is invoked using a handshake technique invented by Milton Erickson, but even if you get a good description of it, it's still very difficult to do with any success. I was distracted when the trick was on, so I'm not really sure why he did it, though. It might just have been a bit of misdirection, making people think that he was using it to perform the card trick.

...both books on Milton Erickson are very very interesting...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1555520529/qid=1143801237/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_3_1/202-5290216-1884632

Especially if you read Trance This by Kenton Knepper too...

I wouldn't say you would suddenly recieve instant Derren Brown type powers though...it's all in the beard apparently...

Does anyone want to tell me why I shouldn't accept Tomo's hand to be shaked? lol

Indeed. He was probably the first to really demonstrate the power of metaphor over the subconscious.

Cos he'll put you in a trance the way Brown did with Lucas.

In 22 Blows to the Head by Jay Sankey, he gets you to pick out 3 cards, then asks you which one you want to hide, to keep, and to give away.

You then open your prediction and you have got the cards they chose correct, and also what they decided to do with them!!!

[plug]Consider buying that DVD, unless you are mentally insane[/plug]

Edit: Ooops, did I say consider buying? Drop the bits in bold
