You're right it is a very dark video try and get more light on the situation next time as it will be easier for people to give you advice.

Card Vanish - with how you are performing this on the vid your clipping of the card is quite visible. Add a wave to the hand to disguise this and think about your angles.

Coin vanish - You need to work alot on this so i'd advise on getting "Bobos modern coin magic" book (it's cheap enough).
To me you are not convincing enough with placing the coin in the hand for starters and your CL----C P--M needs alot of work.

Only other advice is PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. Hope this helps.

I can't comment about the coin vanish as I don't do coins but here's some stuff to work on on the b---p---. I don't mean to sound critical - it was good - it just needs work to make it smoother.
  1. It's fairly obvious that you are clipping the card as your index finger comes over the corner before you even start the motion. Try not to move your hand until you are well covered by the wave.
  2. You do quite a 'choppy' action for the vanish, which is OK but it makes it look as if you are throwing the card forwards. I would recommend that you do a gentle up-and-down wave which will cover any preparations you need to make, and pretend to throw the card into the air. If you follow it with your eyes everyone will look with you and you can make sure that you have the card palmed correctly.
  3. Try to reappear the card in the same position that you vanished it into. On a couple of the vanishes you ended up with you index finger over the corner of the card again, which might tip the method prematurely.

Apart from that it was actually quite nice, so don't be too self-critical :).

yeah seriously sort out the light source, it seems like your performing in a bat cave. Just practice these moves, its seems like you know them well, just keep at it and soon you'll have them down in no time :D

For the BP... I find it normally works very well to make the card move a bit on my middle finger usng my index finger and thumb on the front, then rub the front with the thumb as you tip your fingers (and the card) slightly towards yourself. From there, proceed as normal.

As for the coin vanish... your sleight doesn't look like a real transfer. And you make too much of the location of the coin. Just hold your hand naturally and sort of knock on your other hand. Failing that, just use the thumb and do a fairly flat wave.

Other than that... get the light sorted! lol

But for a beginner they aint too bad :D Practice will iron out most of the creases

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism

The card trick in the 2nd video looks much better and is impressive so well done.

I've done a little practice with the coins and that trick on the video isn't the best. Again it's too dark so why not do that one again in the light. Im my opinion it's obvious where it is and eventually reappearing agin.

That said you're a better 'eager newbe' than me so good luck with your magic.

Cheers

My first post

Postby allanmagicdavis » Mar 30th, '06, 21:52

Im sorry, this is my first post, i dont mean to be rude, but why dnt you pracice a bit more before putting videos up, just a few comments, im sure people have said it before. I could hardly see a thing, why put a crappy video of you doing simple stuff on video. Just practice a bit more then turn the lights on in your house. Hope this helps.

Video quality isn't great.
And the effects are very simple yes.

But we're not marking him on how good the video is or how advanced the technique is.
Just rating hi sleight of hand as asked.

And also, it would be nice if your posts had spaces after commas

Woah.... Don't pull your punches much do you! Personally I didn't think it was all that bad and it takes guts to put a video on a site full of magicians to judge!

Although the lighting didn't let me see much I think that there is potential, and I really think you're being a too bit harsh. There are many levels in magic and although this video may not be up to your esteemed level yet, maybe it would be better to encourage and give constructive advice rather than launch an attack, just a thought... no offence.

Actually I just watched the 2nd version (with the miracle of elecTRICK lighting) and it really isn't that bad.

AS far as the bp goes: try imagining you're plucking the card from the air, so pull it back slightly when you produce it (just a touch) and it will improve greatly.

I agree that was a bit harsh of me to say that.

Its good to have a few Simon Cowell's amongst us.

Keep it real say it as you see it! If we're to get any better we need the open and honest feedback. (Except when I post my first video....make sure you're nice then!!)
