Well hello forum.

Here is the required introduction from me. I'm 45 and just getting into magic seriously for the first time. I say seriously because as a kid I had a "special" drawer to keep my little collection of self-working props in but never got to the point of learning any sleight of hand stuff and gave up by my teens. Always tried to catch anything on TV of a magical nature over the years though.

Anyway, bought myself Gerry Griffins "Complete Card Magic" DVDs just before Xmas and "Show Off With Cards" just after. Now I seem to be ruining decks of bicycle cards at an alarming rate, and there was I thinking that this was going to be a nice cheap little hobby. Thank goodness for ebay thats all I can say.

It stands for (I think...) Compulsive Unnecessary Purchasing Syndrome and basically entails us all spending much more on magic than we need to.

Eg "I saw a really cool trick the other day. I'll probably never use it once its opened but I bought it anyway. Damn CUPS!"


However, if you want to dress it up a bit, I suppose you could say it's just a different type of magic trick.
One that entails us completely emptying our bank account with one click of a button.

It's actually Uncontrollable rather than Unnecessary as everything in Magic is necessary (or so I tell Mrs.M) and it suggests that we really aren't to blame for spending so much dosh on Magic. As you might expect, there is no cure for this ailment, only a partial relief when the Postman magically makes the next parcel of Magic goodies arrive or when you're at a shop or dealers place. That's the point when the wallet/credit cards also become uncontrollable and start doing their stuff !

I'm sure there was a whole debate about this. Some people saying nothing is unneccesary and some people saying compulsive implies uncontrollable behavious therefore if it was uncontrollableit would be a superfluous word...
