Are all card decks the same? which ones are best to buy?

Postby Sky321 » Apr 4th, '06, 22:27

I have an interesting question

Are all decks of cards the same? are there decks that are easier to perform with then others if so what are they called? i have noticed that some cards have a slippery surface so are difficult to grip so what are the ones that are recommended to get?

Thanks

If you're just after a normal un-gaffed deck, then without doubt it's bicycle decks all the way (in my opinion anyway  )

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Use the search function. You can find a lot of past threads on this same topic.

Buy either Bicycles, Tally Ho's or Bee's.

I prefer Bee's over Bicycles. They make you get a lot of stuff perfect as they are borderless.

ie. Ghost count

Now see I'm a Bicycle man. That didn't sound manly, but still.

You could search "Decks", "Cards", "Bicycle", "Tally-Ho", or "Bee's".

EDIT: Un-gaffed means that it's not a trick deck. Just a regular deck of cards. Unlike a Svengali or Invisble Deck (Trick, Gimmicked, or Gaffed).

The most used deck in magic is probably a Bicycle deck. Then there are Bee's and Tally-Ho. All of them are of excellent quality and air-cushioned, which makes them quite slippery (it can be very important). If you are a beginner, I would recommend either bikes or Tally-Ho, as Bee's are borderless, which makes them not very suitable for some effects.

And by the by, go for a poker size deck, not bridge size.

I'm not a fan of borderless bee cards. Yes, with practice - you can get it clean and invisible on things like an elmsley count (as Kev said) - but that really serves no purpose for me.

I look at it like this - if the spectator doesn't suspect I've counted the cards in a peculiar way - what difference does it make what kind of deck I'm using? Doing a perfect Elmsley with borderless cards only satisfies the magician - it has zero effect on the audience, since they shouldn't be aware of what you're doing.

Lately, I find myself beginning to like the World Poker Tour Bees. There are two versions - one a bordered bee design, the other just a solid white or black back with the logo in the center. I prefer the traditional back.

The cards handle nicely, and work well for everything I need. I've also noticed that some people have found the cards to be more innocent. I can't figure out why, but I have had reactions that seem to be in line with this.

But I still love my Bikes!

Tally-Ho cards are strange for me. I love them, they are excellent quality (better than Bikes, in my opinion) but for some reason I don't use them. I almost covet my Tally decks. I know, it's silly!

bikes

Postby jobe41off » Apr 11th, '06, 05:33

gotta say bikes, i understand with bee's u require perfection because ofd the lack of borders but no one is perfect, slight mistakes get made and they normally happen during a show, i find bikes hide any little card slip that may occur, much better for doing the elmsley count and the backs of bikes i think look a little more professional cuz so many rip off companies use the diamond pattern which is found on bee's
