My Version Of Joker's Wild

Postby magic_evmeister » Apr 5th, '06, 18:14

I was playing with the "Joker's Wild" routine today (the standard one taught on penguin) and came up with what is, as far as I'm concerned, a new routine for it. Whilst my performance wasn't great in the video I like the method of this and will be trying this down the pub soon. What do y'all think? I'm really more after comments on the method itself but if anyone wants to comment on my actual ability then why not, even though i know it wasn't good.

Just watch your get ready and you'll be fine.

I think I may like this handling more than the original. The addition of the erdnase slowed it down and made the changes more impressive (I think).

It's a matter of personal opinion, but I have never really liked this trick. To be honest, I don't really care for the shapeshifter change. It always looks suspicious to me.

Your handling of it was fine, I just don't like the move in general. I think the Erdnase change is more powerful (yours was done nicely, btw).

Nice job, as usual!

Thanks Demitri, always nice to have your opinion on anything, whether good or bad.

Anymore comments? Maybe I should make this thread a poll. Is this better or worse than the original method...

As Demitri I'm not a fan of this trick. But I like the erdnase change as an add on here because that colour change is really a killer one.
The original trick ends with the dl, changing the second card back to the joker (swiping it trough the deck like a credit card or something). I think it's a strong ending to a trick as the visual changes have happened very fast so the spectator really burns your hands at the end. When you then do a dl and slowly and clearly run that card trough the deck there's no way you can cheat, even though the card changes.
So I like the erdnase change here but I like the original ending more then this one...

I loved it.

The only thing is, it's very clear you are doing something with your second hand, even if it isn't apparent what that is. I think you either need to move the hands further apart (with more voice to direct attention onto the lead card) or place the lead hand/card in the eyeline for a second to cover the moves.

I couldn't do it in a million years, so I'm speaking as a layman here. The second hand was clearly up to no good.

Thanks for the kind words and constructive comments Ian. Always welcome. I know what you mean about the fiddly moves getting my break. I dunno what was going on. I think it was 'cause my hands were cold, I even breathed on my hands before doing the erdnase change 'cause I can't do it otherwise.

I thought I'd let a few people post to see if it gets mentioned but nobody has yet. But did anyone spot my pass. For something I've never done for people before I was really impressed with it when I watched the video back, I can barely spot it and I know where it was. How do all you pass-masters out there think it was?

Maybe hand the Joker over to the Spectator at first and tell them to keep hold of it. Then, you could use both hands to do the get ready when you ask for the Joker back. That's what I would do anyways... Huge misdirection!

Very nice handling by the way!

That is an AMAZING pass. I didn't see it at all! I bow before your supremacy in the pass. 8)

I thought you did it by just undercutting half of the deck at the selection - to be honest you could just do that and leave out the pass totally, but that is a BRILLIANT pass. Congratulations.

What I will probably do for real people when i start performing this properly is swing cut the top and have them place the first one there then pass it to the top. Then swing cut it again and have them do the same so they're next to each other and pass it again to bring both to the top, and go from there.

I'm surprised you thought i was undercutting kati...I thought you'd recognise the Swing Swivel Undercut...it's one of the highlights of Born To Perform.

As far as giving the joker to a spectator, that's what I would normally do and make the most of any misdirection I can get. Can't do it on camera. Thanks for the comments though steve, another one of my peeps whose opinion is always welcome. And Kati, those are the kindest words I've ever had about my magic (from a magician anyway). You've made my day. Only problem is my pass lacks that consistency, still working on it though.

I watched it again and again, but I couldn't see the pass! I know where it must have been, and I heard it, but it's excellent!

Is it a classic pass? I've seen it on Born To Perform but he doesn't actually do it to show what it looks like to a spec.

It is most certainly a classic pass...

This is where my pass is at from watching Ninja 1 and Sankey's VERY detailed explanation on his Revolutionary Card Magic DVD. I'm really pleased that no-one saw it. It's given me the confidence to try using it regularly with my spectators.

, I didn't make myself clear. You controlled the card to the top and then did a swing cut to replace the second card on top of the first. I meant that as I wasn't paying proper attention to that bit I thought you just replaced the card into the middle of the pack and then undercut to it instead of swing cutting to it.

Of course I recognize the SSU, it's a great control! 8)

I watched this last night frame-by-frame. And not because he's obscuring the view, but because it is a genuinely fantastic pass, tere's a couple of glimpses of it and thats all.

But that's at frame-by-frame speed.

At sensible speed, it's still practically impossible to see.

Well done mate!

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism
