The Pass or 3 Card Monte

Postby trickyricky » Apr 7th, '06, 11:01

Hi guys. I know ive been around here for a while now and everything, but i have been letting my magic slip unfortunately due to work and university. but im ready to get back to it. I thought i'd restart my training by learning something that i have always wanted to in the past, and i came up with two options: Three Card Monte or The Pass. My question to you is firstly, which of these would you value higher in your repertoire (sp?)?

Now, having done a little research and read reviews etc, i have come up with a list of possible DVDs that i could buy to learn these effects/sleights. My second question to you is, based on your opinion of my earlier question, which of these DVDs is the best to buy and learn from and which is the best value for money etc. Unfortunately i can only buy one. :( These DVDs are:

The Pass by Randy Wakeman
Pass with Care by Peter Cassford

The Ultimate Three Card Monte by Michael Skinner
Sal Piacente: Street Monte - Three Card Monte
Ultra Monte by Daryl

Thanks for any help you can give me!

Rich

Mike Skinner's The ultimate 3 card monte and Daryls Ultra Monte are a packet effects and will not teach you the real three card monte routine.

A bit of deep google searching will reveal some great tutorials on the monte.

So if your going to buy any go for the Pass. Anything wrong with learning it from Expert at the Card Table?

Three Card Monte can't really be compared to the pass. The pass is a move and the other a trick. They're both great but if you can double under cat I'd learn the monte.

BTW I've heard Street Monte is awful. I have heard good things about School for Scoundrals though.

Cheers,

thanks for ur help guys. i think im kind of leaning towards the Pass. I know its the same as a double undercut but theres something about the pass that i like the sound of and want to learn. Having said that though, everybody seems too know a good 3 card monte! Think i'll learn that later though.

So which Pass DVD? Im thinking The Pass by Randy Wakeman.

there's some very good stuff from Jay Sankey on the Pass on Revolutionary Card Magic....

http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodshow.asp?code=580

its a little pricey, but you do get loads of useful sleights and effects on there...and very few repeats from his other dvds too...

i found street monte dvd pretty good actually...

nicely broken down and you see how it works "live" too...

i'd pick the pass personally though...

You can always use the pass to do a 3 card monte.

David Regal has a fantastic Three Card Monte routine on his "Premise, Power, Participation" series. It's gimmicked but something you can definitely make yourself. It's on the third volume and it's called the "Mucilaginous Monte".

The pass is a very useful and disarming sleight, one which I would higly recommend learning, and if you are going to bother to put the time and effort into it then learn a few different passes. You'll have something for all situations then. Also, be patient with it. It's not easy to do right...

The pass

I would "pass" on the Pass with Care and go for Richard Kaufman's On the Pass. I think Pass with Care was good, but On the Pass was better. This is an excellent DVD on many variations of the pass and Kaufman's teaching style is better.
