Storing Gosh Sponges - mix colors?

Postby Option » Apr 9th, '06, 05:53

From other posts, I gather sponge storage should be damp in a sealed container. I have a big lunchbox for this. Now I got some new 3" balls, and they're HUGE (!) This means now my balls/rabbits are a bit squished against each other. The color seems to transfer.

Anyone have similar experiences? All my sponges are SSoft Gosh, the big red ones have tiny shadows from where the black ones were against it.

I have 4 colors, does it mean I need 4 boxes? Or does it become colorfast after a small while?

The colors do tend to run when they are damp so I would suggest putting different colors into different ziploc bags.

Good suggestion. I'd personally use Tupperware boxes. While sponges will regain their shape if you get them damp again, then give them a squeeze and let them expand, they are 'happier' fully expanded.

Colours do run, unfortunately. A particularly annoying thing is the rather nice Tenyo effect Parabox, where most sets have the yellow sponge permanently stained with blue dye as soon as you open the packaging.

I'm not quite sure why you feel the need to store them damp at all!

Eugene Burgers tip is to put all new sponge balls etc... into a bowl of warm water overnight when you first get them. This softens them up and they stay very very soft... You should never have to dampen them again!!!! Seems to work fine for me!!!!

I've never even bothered with that and have never dampened them and have had NO problems as a result.

I find that if they have been stored under a little pressure and they've lost their shape a little, a few hours, or overnight in the fresh air and the odd squeeze sorts them out.

If you wet your sponges before a performance you will find that they get really soft and expand a great deal. It makes for easier manipulation :)

I understand that mgould however my point is that you should only ever need to do this once. There should be no need to keep doing it time and time again!!!

Correct. However, if the balls do get out of shape (i.e. you forget to take them out of a pocket after a show!) then a quick damping will bring them back to life.

As for colour bleed, simply keep them separate ;)

Just once? Hm, I'll try let it dry out then.

What do you do with the big ones :?: My 3" balls are gigantic! They fill up so much space...
