Packet tricks - prep

Postby Option » Apr 13th, '06, 01:51

How do you store your Packet tricks? Tricks requiring special cards, or stacks, or setups. This can be a few cards, or up to half a deck.

Do you have a deck for each trick prepared? Do you keep the packet and put them into a deck just before? Do you restore a proper deck after the trick?

Some of these tricks require culling up to half a normal deck = setup time. But the other side is turning a normal deck into a 1trick pack.

I peronally keep them in a packet trick wallet. I tried to find a link to the aite iI bought it from but couldn't. It's a UK sight anyway so probably not much use for it down-under.

All you need is a good reason why the cards you're using weren't in a deck to start with. Here's some examples:

NFW: Why would you want 4 jokers clogging up your deck?
Twisted Sisters: You need to keep the queens separate just for this trick (all 8 of them...*wink*)

These are just two of the packet tricks taking up the space in my packet trick wallet. I'm sure whatever trick you're doing you can come up with a reason why it is in there and not in the deck...

The things I'm having trouble is packets that also require deck prep.
Eg one trick requires some double faces, then those faces removed from a normal deck. The double faces can be stored, but the normal deck takes time to prep.

What does the wallet look like? If you have a pic I can try to find a close substitute

I can take a picture for you if you'd like one...I'll sort it tomorrow.

If you need a deck with gimmicked cards then I suggest one of two things:

-The best solution I can offer is to have you gimmicked deck in your pocket. Use a normal deck of the same colour and put it away in that pocket to do a few non-card tricks. (stuff I use is Crazy Man's Handcuff, Sensations, or even though it's still cards, "Sankey's Choice" from his Very Best of Series - as it is a self contained packet trick.

-You could also try to tailor any effects you do before your gimmicked trick so that they don't expose any gimmicks present in your deck. For an example of this I recommend you check out some of David Regal's "Premise, Power, Participation" Series. He has planned his set for these to perfection in my opinion to work around the gimmicks of the decks he uses.

Thanks for the link Evmeister ;)

And on subject, I too try to detract attention away from a gimmicked deck, by doing some normal tricks, putting the deck in my pocket, doing some non card magic and then taking the gimmicked deck out of my pocket. If all goes well no one realises its a switch and no one wants to see the cards :D

And for storing packet tricks... I try to keep them all in baggie type things. Keeps em clean and you know where they are. And they're easy enough to reach into your pocket and open without anyone being suspicious of what you're doing

You wont find much better anywhere and it's nothing - a rigmarole with a few bits of paper and lots of spiel. That is Mentalism
