magic etiquette

OK i am relatively new to card magic but was blown away by a Boris Wild lecture DVD and deck and have well and truly taken the plunge...

So from a newcomers perspective...

How do you go about findng out what you are buying... I appreciate that secrets need to be maintained but take the following example:

I was in a magic shop the other day and was shown a trick - cool - I like it I said but you turned your back half way through - He said you need not, it was merely the way he presented it... I purchased the trick (£17.50) and lo and behold you only need not turn your back on the audience - if you were usng a braille deck!!! :-(

Point is - Even though I know the secret - Do I have recourse to go back and ask for a refund?

I have a Svengali deck... I purchased a Mirage deck... Different magic guy... Where can anyone go to do their research?

Is there a list of generally accepted gaff decks that can be used to check off what I have? Is there is anyone I can PM to discuss this with rather than airing my laundry. I would be very grateful!!!

disjointed I know - not what I wanted to be my first post but any help is welcome...

To be honest buddy ... the best resource for tricks is this place, simply ask around on the boards and someone usualy knows the effect you have been looking at, and they'll be able to explain a little bit more about it ... then when you make your purchase you'll know what your in for.

There are good reasons for sellers not to give refunds on magic stuff, as you said, but this doesn't mean they have the right to lie to you or rip you off.

If the seller misrepresented what you were buying, then I think you should be able to get a refund.

What's worth considering is that the gaff or whatever may be something that you consider is obvious as you know the secret, when in actuality it's not when it's presented properly.

Anyway, I hope you sort this one out

Magic tip on buying #245 b.

Never trust the ''Classic Magic Dealer Guy''
This is the guy who obviously doesn't care about magic more than the profit he can do be selling his stock. You can easily recognise him by the way he always states the price of an effect immediately when you mention one...

(Don't get me wrong here, I don't think every magic dealer match the ''Classic Magic Dealer Guy'' but it's such a pain to deal with those...!)
Unfortunately, you don't have many recourse against him. Don't forget that knowledge is power and Talkmagic is loaded of knowledge ;)

(Still it is always reliefing to trash talk about that magic dealing guy)

So how does David Copperfield walk through the great wall of China... I am off on holiday to the Orient in a few weeks and thought I'd give it a whirl

Seriously - thanks and I hope to see you guys around...
