Derren Brown Bizarre magic

Postby Mahoney » Apr 19th, '06, 23:00

Just out of interest (vauge connection) what did people think of Derren Brown's needle through the arm presentation with Robbie Williams? That's a bizarre trick but he used it in a sort mentalist way. Also I saw "something wicked this way comes" last night and he did the nail up the nose and walked on glass. This is more bizarre stuff really isn't it. He incorporated it in interesting ways though.

What do you guys think about this?

I'm not too keen of the look of the particular trick in question ("hole in the head"). It is so weird that it crosses alot of genres...

[Edit: this was originally in connection to "Hole in the head" being 'bizarre' magic.]

...i think that the style in which Derren Brown performed it wasnt especially bizzarist as such...it was kinda nonchalant to me at least...

the only sinister overtone i found was the Williams' singing of 3 blind mice...

i think that Derren's nail up nose and so on are more mind over matter stylings than anything darker as such...

ahhhh its taken years of me praying that someone somewhere would push sharp objects into Robbie Williams...

Sadly I missed it as I was on the road. Anyone know if and when it will be on again? E4?

Should be on E4 tonight at around 11pm followed by Mr C Angel (if last week was anything to go by)...

EDIT} Just checked and it most definitely is at 11pm tonight on E4 (and if you miss that try 12am on E4+1)

Can anyone help me source the life sized Robbie Williams gimmick as used in this effect? It was so lifelike!

I thought it was pretty wooden. Nowhere near as good as my Mark Owen gimmick.

I thought his presentation (as always) was phenomenal. Crucifying Robbie Williams on Easter Sunday, adding the sinister element of having him sing a childrens rhyme is genius. A very clever man is our Mr. Brown.

The nail up the nose thing he does live, makes me squirm ever time I see it. Great effect though!

LOL hahahahha

I watched the repeat last night I thought it was not a bad episode, and straight after Mr Angel was on the TV but I could only watch about 5-10 minutes of him befor I got bored. I don't know what it is with Chris Angel but I just can't warm to him, I think he has David Blaine Syndrome where he has to be constantly moody and mysterious. This is not totaly a bad thing but the show is filled with too much unnessesary rubish and not enough actual Magic and illusions.

I made my wife dissapear just by arguing with her!!!

Yeah I'd agree with that, I own the Mindfreak DVD but find some of his tricks a little cheesy. I think the mystical wanderer thing works alot better with american audiences than with us altogether more intelligent Brits

John, I think its a question of choice. I prefer the superior hand painted tattoo work on the Robbie, where as you prefer the hand knotted floppy hair of the Mark version. I wonder if they're produced in the same factory in china?

I believe the Gary Barlow model has been discontinued, though.

Apparently the amount of latex required to make the gut on the Barlow model believable just didn't prove cost effective.

Thanks for that - I managed to catch it at midnight and was suitably impressed.

Loved the nursery rhyme bit. I personally couldn't help but laugh out loud hearing robbie williams recite three blind mice. Why? I have no clue, but the whole trick entertained me and thats what its all about.

Personally I think some of the stuff that cris angel has done has been impressive. However last nights double bill didn't fill me with much joy ...

How wrong could E4 get it tho - 2 muscle readings straight after each other .....

Yeah I know, and the object to be found was the same for both programs a "key" Maybe that had something to do with me turning the TV off after being bored stiff.

I thought the lighting on Mr Browns 'anderson effect' was to strong, looked a bit obvious to me. However the performance was tops.
I've been in rock bands for years and although I enjoy Mr Angels work this lisping, rock God act really gets on my t^^s.
I know loads of Angel lookalikes, oh yeah I'm working on the new album blahh.

p.s yes
I'm twisted and bitter. x lol
