What to dopeople that try to find the secrets of your tricks

Postby Delude » Apr 25th, '06, 19:22

Hello :D . If i video one of my tricks i'll usually emssa round with titles and stuff and show some of my friends, however, there are some really annoying people that will really like it but then go and search all the over the internet to see how it's done. After they have finally found it come up to me and say 'I know how to do your trick, all you do is...' and then blurt the whole flipping thing out so everyone else can hear it. What i am i meant to do? Really damn annoys me. Should i just call the trick by somethign else (the title on the video) so they don't know the name? i just say to some people that there are loads of ways of doing it and the way they mentioned is the most obvious and worst and that i don't use that version. These kind of people really annoy me and some even think that i really like them after they foubnd out the secret! Grrrr. Have they not got soemthing better to do than search all over the internet and ruin a great trick that you have spent money on?

Opinions please :D

Unfortunately, there's no fool-proof method to stop this kind of thing from happening. With the internet, anyone can find almost anything if they look hard enough.

Changing the name is a pretty good idea though - at least a search on the internet won't bring up too much info. Try doing that and see if the problem keeps popping up.

It is a shame when people do this but there is not much you can do. All I do is, remember who the lame people were who ruined it for you, and don't show them any more tricks!

If they can't appreciate a magic trick (and they obviously don't) stear clear, stick with the people who do like to be impressed!

I made my wife dissapear just by arguing with her!!!

i hate people trying to ruin my effects. but i don't have a problem with people wanting to find out the secret. just means they're curious, and a potential prodigy

Grr. Well they really annoy me, the people i've came across. Boasting to everyone about how they know the trick. Then they tell everybody else how it is done, some might even try the treick themselves, after no practise revealing to even more poeple. I suppose I'm okay with people wanting to know the secret because that's good as it showing that you did the job well. i also don't like people that are just fisighing for secrets and asking me if i can teach any to them for free. Even if i was to, i know they would not use it and would simply tell others.

Personally, I don;t ever tell people what the name of a trick is that I'm performing to them. I have my patter worked out as part of the routine so the name isn;t necessary.

If you have people that search by the name of the trick, then it seems obvious not to give them the name in the first place.

I personnaly think there is nothing wrong with these kind of person. We all are curious by nature and try to find/explain something we can't understand is just natural. If a spectator doesn't give a damn about my presentation, then I could feel offended, but if someone try to catch up with me and debunk me, well I just take it as a "friendly challenge" and it motivates me to push my limits! we definitely need person that doubt about magic and try their best to explain it or else wy would people be entertained by magic?

i suppose, but is the fact that they boast to others that they know a trick and then tell everyone how it's done

Well you got to put on your best magician suit, go out there and show them something they've never seen before
(if they get rude or you feel like they are really trying to ruin the show for the fun, then it's not wroth it)....

I just use variations. If they ask to do it again and try to catch me, I only do it if I have a variation to it where it'll stop them from catching me. At least for another round. But if they start getting on my nerves, I just stop. Tell them I'm tired or something.

Like leighton said, if they arn't going to appreciate it, I won't bother. Just show it to people who will enjoy it.

Isn't this thread just a minor variation of http://www.talkmagic.co.uk/ftopic10298.php&highlight= ? which was started only yesterday? We really only need one thread per topic.

Yeh... Almost immediately after I joined, I started seeing multiple threads of the same/similar/varied topics. I don't know if it's always been like this or not though. :?

Yup - at times there are so many echoes going on it's like living in a Swiss mountain range!

Sometimes it's understandable that similar threads get started out of sheer enthusiasm but in most cases it's not hard to see if the topic has been raised before (it usually has!) and then add to the existing thread.

Clikkkkk!
