Have you looked up Guy Bavli's web site?

He's from your part of the world and he offers some decent materials that would be available to you. His videos being quite fair for a beginner (nothing earth shattering, but ok if you're just starting out).

Video/DVD wise, you need to get your hands on the Osterlind EASY TO MASTER MENTAL MIRACLES set, these are some of the Classics of Mentalism many tend to forget or ignore, but they are generally practical and easy to learn.

With that, you need a copy of Corinda & Annemann the combination of these three things will keep you busy for at least a year's time of honest practice & study. It is during that period you may also want to study what many call "Cold Reading" but, I don't want you to get off on the wrong foot... Avoid the junk that's being promoted by the magic community at present and go back in time a bit; get the works of Richard Webster, Ron Martin, and if you can find it, Herb Dewey. You will learn more "real world" perspective on the subject via these sources than you will in some of the more popular tomes everyone is tauting these days. (Not to mention the fact that Richard's material gives you a means by which to go out and turn some cash in relatively short time.)

Another "foundation" book to pick up would be Banachek's Psychological Subtlties.

Once you're comfortable with these resources and using what they've shared with you start looking in how to structure and use what you've learned. Bob Cassidy's FUNDAMENTALS books will be very practical when it comes to such as will his THEORIES & METHODS FOR THE PRACTICAL PSYCHIC.

One last thing... if you want to learn genuine Mentalism get away from all the magicians! As I've said before, if you want to learn to be a plumber you don't ask a carpenter to teach you e.g. you need to find forums dedicated to Mentalism like the Mental Image, PSILight, etc.

I'm not trying to discourage you from hanging out here, this fourm has much to offer and the majority of the gang here are downright good fellows. But if this is your field of interest there is only so much they can offer you in way of perspective and insight and to learn it properly, you have to be around thsoe that actually do this sort of work daily.

Sadly, most of the "better" mentalism sites are not open to general membership and require invitation (as well as some degree of personal credential) but, as you progress the opportunity will arise for you to graduate into the deeper side of this craft.

Mentalists are very cautious now days when it comes to sharing and who they welcome into the fold in that too much of what they do has become commercialized and "abused". So don't think they're "stuck up" or "aloof" or even have feelings of superiority, it's just our need to escape some of the ridicule and debate that happens in magic forums and our desire to preserve our side of the craft a bit.

Mini, it might be a good idea to start simple, with mindreading effect using the one ahead technique to get usedto the stagecraft side of things.

Karl Fulve's Self-Working Mental Magic uses it, but so too do a large number of instant downloads if shipping books is a problem.

Stigmata is ok. I use Banacheck's version from his PSI series. In answer to your questions:

It is not something that could be repeated very well.
It is not a gimmick, and can be done totally impromptu.
