a card trick, need advice on a better routine

Postby ohminku » May 2nd, '06, 01:40

So I had an idea today so I thought I'd make a video and see if anyone had some ideas using this particular set-up. Sorry about the lighting, hope to hear some responses!

ok thought id reply since no one else has, im not familiar with the trick lol but for your routine id invent some sort of story for your patter, maybe involving acid dissolving the card through the metal or something ( fake acid obviously lol ) I dunno, just an idea.

First and foremost, ditch the Bon Jovi soundtrack....

Your handling of the card box was unusual. You make a deliberate effort to NEVER show the inside of the box at any point. This will arouse a great deal of suspicion.

When you take the deck back out, you should spread through the entire deck. Just flashing a few cards isn't enough to convince people that the card has vanished.

The acid idea is cool, or you could go with a kind of photographic exposure route - using flash paper to "burn" the image into the metal plate.

Good luck with the effect.

Thanks Dmitri, I know exactly what you mean. This is what happened :)
First, I tried to palm off the card as I was putting it in the box, couldn't do it very well. Next, I tried to lateral palm it while rubbing the actual card on the guard... but figured thats too angle sensitive (for me anyhow, I'm new!). So, I decided use this method to just get it on film to get some feedback on how I should present this effect given the materials I have. Thanks a lot for the reply!

Down2Infinity - I always enjoy your videos, love the flourishes.

I agree with Demitri - you have to ditch the Bon Jovi track as the only thing that could have been worse would have been using Europe's 'The Final Countdown'.

I also agree that the handling of the box looks suspicious and there would be an expectation to show the box empty and I agree that you should spread through the whole deck to show that the card is missing.

The final thought on the video is that the card guard not being show beforehand leaves you open to suggestions that the image of the forced card was already there.

It's not really an optical illusion - it just looks like one!
