Work Experience

Postby ace of kev » May 5th, '06, 16:39

Hi guys.

I need to get my work experience forum filled out for next month, but I do not know where I want to go. I am very interested in Chemistry, and in our school they do 3rd year exams, just as a practice. I got a 1 (which is the best), so I am asking you guys do you have any suggestions of *cough*high paid*cough* jobs that have anything to do with Chemistry?

Thanks :D

PS. I also got 1s in about every other subject, but that is a different matter  Oh, and a 1 is about equal to an A I think :?

Yeah becomming a 'Chemist' in the litteral sense of the word would make a nice easy step onto the ladder, local pharmacies or 'Boots' would take work experience staff I'm sure.

My personal thought is that it might be a little dul, if i were looking to get into chemistry i'd have to find something more exciting that you can throw yourself into and get excited about.

If you're thinking about pharasuticals then i think you should find a leading firm that are really looking to develope somthing new, and not just making 'eye drops' or 'laxativs' or somthing ... get on the cancer research wagon and make a name for yourself.

I think its very important to get excited about what you do, otherwise everyday when you leave the house you'll die a little bit on the inside.

If you can find somthing than when someone asks 'What do you do for a living' you can tell them with a passion and a smile on your face then i think you've hit the jack pot.

Shame its not Physics you're interested in, otherwise you could be a rocket scientist or somthing! ... awsome!

A bit of a coincidence as I heard on the radio yesterday morning that there is a growing demand for Chemists as there hasn;t been much of an uptake at Uni's for chemistry over the past few years. In fact, the numbers are so low that Surrey Uni announced that they are closing their Chemistry Labs and others Uni's may follow suit.

Sounds as if you may be in high demand with grades like that in the coming few years.

Well done in your exams! You could check out local chemists and such, but for more industrial stuff I'm not sure where you'd need to go. Near here,we've got Astra Zeneca (or whatever it's called these days), but I'm not sure about anywhere near Glasgow. There's also stuff like lab technicians at schools and colleges.I don't like to suggest it as I a I'm really not a fan of them, but you could ask your career advisor for some advice on places you could go.
You might want to try planit plus for some ideas as well.

HAHA!! I'm doing pharmaceutical chemistry next year at uni! (I knew that was a good decision!)

When i was at University i did some work experience as a lab technician. Maybe a local school could help or even a college.

I believe that legally, you must be at least 16 before you can start getting paid. I'm lucky, I work in my dad's restaurant and I was getting paid before I was 16 hehe... :P

Yeah, so I think places like Boots and pharmacies would accept you. Wouldn't be too difficult to get in for work experience but I don't think they would pay you because you're not offically employed. But work hard at it and they might let you in and you might start getting paid!! Minimum wage

Not Nadia's is it? That's the one on wotsit street (not very good with street names inside town. There's the big one, and the sideways one, and the cobbled one, and the little one with the bridge :)) I think...
