"As I Recall"

Postby wizard renlim » May 1st, '06, 23:23

"As I Recall.." is a great double DVD in which some of Slydini's students pay tribute to the great man, recalling their most cherished moments.
There are clips of Slydini performing and then Cellini (one of his students performing and explaining some of his most famous effects)
One great line was when Slydini was asked by a student what he was going to teach him Slydini answered, "How to take a bow".
I spent two magical days years ago with Slydini learning the coins thru the table and there is no doubt that the man was a master.
I would recommend this to any serious student of magic. It's not easy to master his effects because of the timing and rythm of his magic but a fantastic DVD

I have to agree that this is a fantastic DVD set.
I love coin magic and you always here about how Slydini was the master of misdirection and was amazing with coins. His one coin routine was the origin of todays flurries. So I was excited about the chance to see him perform.
I have looked into many Coins Through Table routines but often come back to Roth's as it is straight forward and magical. I wasn't looking for anything new but the CTT routine as done by Slydini is wonderful, as is the one coin routine. The vanishes are truly magical. I shall be practicing my Imp Pass religiously.
The torn and restored cigarette was interesting but I was disappointed that I wouldn't have a chance to perform it as the only time I perform seated is when I go out for dinner, and not only do I not smoke, there is no smoking in most restaurants. That is until I had a simple but obvious thought (I'm sure people have come up with this way before me)- the exact same method is perfect for torn and restored sugar packet!
The napkin routine is also wonderful.

A lot of the other tricks were interesting but pertained to stage magic, which I don't do. However there is a lot to learn about movement and misdirection from these segments.

I really enjoyed seeing Jim Cellini perform and to see how he had adapted the routines.

Another large part of the DVD was hearing about the man from his students, including Cellini. He was clearly a great man who touched a lot of people.

Would I get this DVD if I wanted a couple of great tricks to show down the pub. Probably not. Would I get this DVD if I wanted to learn more about making magic seem real, to see a master at work and learn from him about misdirection and audience management. Definitely

Hi Shanester,
It's interesting that you should mention sugar packets. Slydini did a wonderful trick with sugar and salt. getting his assistant to taste the sugar to test it was sugar and later provinbg it was salt

Hi Shanester,
The book is called Slydini Encores. Slydini gave it to me on October 13th 1968. Wow! How long ago is that.
It was published in 1966 by Slydini Studio of Magic.
The efect is called Slydini's SWEET SALT.
I quote
"No higher tribute can be paid to this Slydini creation than by quoting his own remark, "This is my favourite close-up trick"

THE EFFECT: Slydini pours from a salt shaker into his left palm. He makes a fist and holds it over a spectator's hand preparatory to allowing the salt to cascade down. However when Slydini opens his left hand, the salt has vanished. Reaching with his empty right hand, Slydini captures the salt out of the air and allows it to run in a stream onto the spectators hand. Several spectators are asked to taste - to make sure it is salt. It is. When asked to taste again - to be very sure, it has changed to sugar!

Thanks,
I'll have to look and see if our circle has it in our library. I know that it is available on CD rom (and have considered buying it before).

Thanks

For those of you interested, Slydini Encores was put on sale by the Houdini corp at
http://www.houdini.com/includes.cfm?pag ... em_id=1778

and is available via Martin Breese in the UK on
http://www.martinbreese.com/cdslydini.htm

Shanester

PS I have no connection with either of these, but thought Slydini enthusiasts might be interested
