what book / dvd?????

Postby Edoardo » May 9th, '06, 08:58

Hi guys... I hope this is the right section to post this (in case it's not, please move it!)
I have a sort of a problem with my next buy... I am looking for something which could be very comprehensive on card sleights, whether a book or a dvd, but I'm not sure on what I should get.
I do magic as a hobby and usually perform while standing up for a few people. The titles of books / dvds I've seen are:

-Daryl's encyclopedia of card sleights (8 dvds)
-Card College by Roberto Giobbi (5 books)
-Lennart Green's magic (6 dvds)
-R.Wilson's royal Road to Card Magic (5 dvds)
-Miracles for Mortals (2 dvds - can't remember the author)
-The art of card manipulaton by Jeff Mc Bride (3 dvds)

I'd like to know, also considering how I perform magic and the value-for-money ratio of these products, if you have any suggestions on which one you'd think is the most suitable for me... Something on an intermediate level I would say!
Thanks in advance!
Edoardo

I think the best place to get detailed opinions on these is probably the review section.

I don't know about very many of these but I know about some

TAOCM by Jeff McBride is more dedicated to stage flourishes and productions and things - very fun if you want to be able to do that sort of thing but it's not card sleights.

I don't own Card College but I've heard only good things about it...the only problem is that it's expensive. Still, it should last you a good long time - there's a LOT of content in them.

How advanced are you at card magic? I know that's a bit of a hard question to answer but can you do, say, an AC routine? Some good forces? A pass? RRTCM is mostly a beginners book, so if you already know some card magic, you may find it a bit basic - though there's still good content in there.

Likewise, I think Green Magic is on the advanced side so you may not want to get it if you think it might be too hard.

Kati

P.S. I only own TAOCM so take what I say with a pinch of salt :)

First what do you have in hand? How did you start in magic?
If you're beginner, I would say go with the Royal Road to Card Magic BOOK. As I posted earlier GoMagicGo has a free companion podcast for RRtCM book and I think the books are better than dvds.

As for Card College and Daryl's Encyclopedia. These are really good. They will be still helpfull in future more than now. If you learn visually go for the Daryl, but Card College is also great. I'm collecting CC volume by volume so it don't cost that much. Also you can find Daryl's videos on L&L site for $10.

Miracles for Mortals - I don't recomend this dvd, I don't have it. But I read some reviews on E forums they aren't that good.

Art of Card Manipulation- If you want to learn many ways to produce cards from thin air, or vanish them with many other moves; you should get it. But I like Xtreme Beginnerz dvd more than those series. Maybe it's wrong to compare those two but I don't like manipulaiton that much. Only fancy cuts and some vanishes.

Lennart Green dvds- Those are great. Especially I like 1, 6 and 7-lite. But they are really advanced for a beginner.

Hi !!!
I would recommend this 2:
-Daryl's encyclopedia of card sleights (8 dvds)
-Card College by Roberto Giobbi (5 books)
Both are a very good complement to learn magic skills.
Giobbi´s books are the best ones I ever bought.
Daryl teaches you very well and its entertaining.
Michael Ammar has a set o dvd´s to learn cardmagic and good games.
Hope this help you.

Salute!
