I have spent the last 3 hours on the web trying to decide on a floating card illusion, and can't get anywhere. Some people love hummer, others hate it.

So I thought if I post here what I want to do, someone may be able to help me!

My plan is to perform the Jay Sankey NAILED trick, and with the 4 of diamonds revealed at the end (that doesn't give the game away - its on his video!) have it float or fly in a spectacular way.

I will be performing this to a bout 40 people so will need to be more than just a 3 inch hover, and will have a vid camera set up for the close stuff which is the main part of nailed, but I want to top it off with a huge bit of magic.

I have read that hummer takes about 5 mins set up - what I want to do is to simply pick up the diamond card and go with it - it obviously needs to be a redbacked card to fit in with nailed. Not fishing for how it is done, i just get the impression from my research that something is gimicked along the way.

Having read this, can anyone recommend which they have found to be the best and cleanest version of a classic.

PS - I have no qualms about the ole IT use!

Yes, the hummingbird card requires some setup, however, there's absolutely nothing from stopping you getting set BEFORE you start. You can have everything in order, perform nailed (or any number of effects) and once the time is right, go into the floating card.

I've not really read about the Jay Sankey nailed yet in to much detail.....

But if you after after a floating card routine then i recomend UFO card spinning, some may say its not ideal but i think its worth the shot... uses IT tho

There is quite a lot of card manipulation that the 4 has to go through.

not knowing the details of any floating card is quite useful as i think that i can describe it without giving anything away (what can you give away that you don't know about ... philosphy now!)

I am guessing that there will be some attaching of the card to something or other on the way through. The 4 is the focus of the nailed trick and needs to go through quite a bit of manipulation, so I am guessing that it won't be until the end of nailed when I will be able to 'attach' the card to whatever.

therefore if there is any pre-set up required that would get in the way of such manipulation it wouldn't work.

I have seen a couple of illusions around that refer to a 'borrowed' card, which might suit.

One last thing, there will be no room for other apparatus. Again, I don't know where IT hangs from (never having used the stuff before) but if there is any set up that needs support other than my own body, it won't be good.

How does the 'real floating card' fare against humming bird or ufo in terms of set up and good visuals?

One last thing - I am quite attracted by the idea of loops. I it possible to use loops with any of the floating card tricks (without giving anything away!)

The amount of manipulation isn't important.

With any of the effects mentioned, you can float a spectator's borrowed coin, or even a playing card if they happen to have their own deck on them.

I don't think you need to buy a floating card effect as such, I think you just need a hook up for your IT that's comfortable for you and achieves the desired result. I'd thoroughly recommend getting hold of any books or DVDs on IT, as hookups will probably be covered, and you'll have a few ideas to make the floating/whirling/hummer/UFO/whatever card more your own.

I reviewed Michael Ammar's Easy To Master Thread Miracles Vol 1(see permanent wallet hookup), and I understand that the rest of the series are just as good. Also it might be worth reading LeClair's 'Who's afraid of IT?'.

If it's as a finisher to Nailed, then just a simple, single, semi-rise to your hand will probably be the knockout punch at the end of the effect that the audience need.

I don't like the fact that the hummer/whirling/floating/whatever card is sold separately - it's on IT DVDs that may cost over twice the price, but you get five times as many effects and enough tips to last a lifetime!

LeClair's DVD, "Whos afraid of IT," does cover how to have IT setup in advance, as well as various techniques for moving into it with borrowed cards, rings, dollar bills, etc. The DVD comes with IT (at least where I got it), describes where to find IT, and goes through many IT effects, including the hummer card.

I'll post a review of the DVD in a day or so, as I see that only the text is reviewed.

cheers. I got 'hummer' in the post yesterday and was humming madly very quickly. I am a bit of a juggler so the moves were quite natural. But you are right, the hook up is a bit of a fiddle, even when you know what you are doing and I kept losing the end!
