Ok, so I'm really interested in slight of hand card/coin tricks.

I was researching on the internet when i found this forum. There is so freaking many different tricks and setups and videos that i have no idea where to start.

I have about $100 to spend.

What do i need to start practicing and learning card/coin tricks? Can i use any plain old deck of cards, or are there nice ones i should buy that are better to handle?

Any newbie info would be appreciated.

If you could go back to when you just started learning magic, with the knowledge you have now of the different videos and decks/props, and you had $100, what would you buy?

Royal Road to Card Magic Book (or 5 DVD set) and a couple of packs of bicycle cards (or Tally Ho cards). The DVD 'Born to Perform' has become very popular with beginners. As for coin tricks try 'Modern Coin Magic' book by BOBO. Don't worry about the latest gimmick or packet trick at the moment. Just concentrate on learning the basic skills and sleights.

I will agree with stephen for the most part,

I was in the very same situation as you. You could use standard cards hanging around the house, but they won't have the same quality feel as other makes like bikes or tally ho, if you want to do magic for longer than a month, go and get good cards.

I went and got Bicycle cards they are very good quality and feel like silk in your hands easy to manipulate, I also brought "The Royal Road To Card Magic" (book from Amazon) and "The New Modern Coin Magic" book by BOBO (from a magic shop), I do find the Bobo book a little heavy going though.

I have since got the RRTCM 5 disk DVD set, it is a godsend and works directly in conjunction with the book. I have not seen "Born to Perform" so I can not comment on it.

ok, thx for the help, those sound like good books and dvd's.

And yeah, i wanna learn slights and all the crazy shuffling before i get into the gimmicks.

But that coin burning through the cards trick looks fun.

Ok, i have 4 packs of bicycle rider backs in my hands. Royal road being shipped and a few crappy card shuffling books from the library.

I'll be back in 2 months if i don't quit by then cause i suck too bad to update my progress, thx for the help.

sorry for another reply, but before i go, i need to ask 1 question.

Are big hands better for card tricks or small hands? I think my hands may be on the small side. I'm trying this one handed riffle shuffle and man, I'm cutting it close to not even being able to do it. I can get it done, but if i have to extend my fingers any farther than this for other tricks, I'm in trouble.

things like one handed cuts, one handed shuffles and XCM are better to have big hands...but for your average slieghts and stuff i dont think it reallys matters...


...and you dont need to leave and come back in 2 months ...stay active in the forum so if you have questions and things we can help you

and lastly good luck...stay at it and you will start to see progress then once you start to see you are getting alot better there will be no stopping you from there

When you get Royal road remember to work through it slowly. Don't move onto the next section until you are confident with the section you have learned

there was a magician a long time ago called max malini who was a sleight of hand artist and card magician when he palmed a card it was so obvious as it stuck out the side but he used misderection and never got caught. google him he is an awesome guy.

Born to perform was my first DVD. I also got 100 tricks with everyday objects (coins, elastic bands). I use bicycle cards and find them good and not over priced. I would say to begin with pick a few tricks you like and work on those. Magic can be overpowering when you first start because of the range of tricks on the market. If your going to shop online have a look at a few different shops, prices can go up and down depending on the site you use. Good luck and stick with it.
