Summer Party Magic

Postby trickyricky » May 14th, '06, 21:43

Hi guys. Having had my first of many barbeques of the summer last night, i decided that its about time that i broadened my horizons of magic. Instead of just walking around with a deck of cards and throwing them at people when ive got a bit drunk, or burning them on the barbeque!

I am looking towards the more kind of impromptu magic with various items that you might find at a barbeque. I wouldnt forget my cards of course, but i just think it would be cool to have lots of different things to show people! I already know about sinful, and stigmata although i dont own them. I was looking at healed and sealed soda can. Can ANY can be used with this? And also needle through arm, is there a version that i could do with like a barbeque coal poker thing (sorry dont know what its called!)?

Are there any other tricks that meets these criteria out there that you guys would recommend?

Thanks, Rich

Hi mate, healed and sealed soda can can be used with any can yes. And seeing as you'll be having beer etc at summer barbeques, I think that would be a great trick :D

Definitely grab a copy of sinful because it's amazing magic.
You could always try a finger flasher I suppose, try to flick it at the firelighters in the barbeque lol.

Other than that nothing immediately comes to mind of things you can do at barbeques...

Try learning some coin tricks (borrow peoples change) and Sankey does some stuff with keys which could be cool... keys are common enough items :D

Hope that helps!

thanks for the finger flicker idea, that would be quite cool! Yeah ive got a list of things that i want to get now! I dont own a card through window so i thought i might pick one up! Any recommended versions i should go for?

I saw the Dynamo show on tv and got some ideas from that! He does a coin in bottle trick, with borrowed coin AND bottle, and he gets it out as well which looks cool! Also, he does a bottle twist trick. Looks good but cant find it anywhere!

Thanks for your input!

I can't say too much for fear of exposure but I've got the Harry Anderson's version of the needle through arm trick and I suppose you could use a barbeque implement, like a skewer for example, the only problem will be that this way won't produce any "blood".
I've actually been thinking about this as well, 'cos I moved house in Feb this year and I've now got a garden, so it's barbeque time for me too - which includes performing tricks on unsuspecting vitims

QUESTION:
If we can sue McDonalds for making us fat and cigarette companies for giving us cancer; why can't we sue Smirnoff for all the ugly gits we've sh*gged ??

Mmm, might want to check on Kevin Parker "Canz" (multiplying a can of Coke into 3) or "Passing Thru" (Easy and visual Coin thru Bottle, both could be borrowed)
Have fun

If they'll be going on till late-ish (as in starting to get a bit dark) you could always get some red D'Lites and pull a "glowing ember" or "heat your thumb up" in the barbeque. Then pull another one out with the other hand.
Then juggle with them :D

And then eat them and comment on how good the food is.

Then sit down and laugh silently to yourself as everyone looks at you like a freak. Especially if you juggle them as if they really are hot and complain about it "being a bit hot on the way down" after eating them and saying how good the food is...

Just an idea!

card/coin in sausage

etch a forced card's value onto a blank faced card and smother it in b-b-q sauce to reveal it

torn/restored napkin - flash paper usage too?

a prediction of what someone will choose from the grill? magician's force, you could even eat the other 'choices', then reveal the whole outcome on a napkin as you wish them "bon apetite"...

maybe switch in/out a hotdog for a cigar?

torn and restored bacon?

...you could go surreal and gimmick an eggshell so you could pull out a strip of bacon from it instead...

what came first? the chicken, the egg or......the pig?

A thin skewer could indeed be used for needle thru arm.

And consider getting some red dlites—and plucking bits of 'hot' coal from the barbecue (I've done this and it looks great)

Then, there's the old 'Pyro Perception'... how about having a card selected, and BURNED on the barbecue... you then pick up a sausage or something, and show the card is BLISTERED on your finger?

Something else which goes down well with kids... pluck 'dlite' embers from the barbecue, and change them to orange spongeballs. VERY visual.

Then... a fantastic outdoor effect is Hole in the Head. Give it a chance.

You could do a really good comedy card routine in oven gloves...

this might sound funny or ridiculous but im actually in the process of making my own effect that would fit in perfectly at barbecues and such :D ...im planing trying to get ellusionist interested in it and maybe cut a deal with them...i think its a great effect and its really visual which is a plus :P and amazing...i have never seen anything like it...people are always asking for tricks they can do at their summer bbq's so i deceied to come up with an effect...maybe E will like and sell it for me (which will probably never happen but its worth a try) and you guys can buy my trick :D

..i would tell you guys what its like but wayyy to many people can access these forums and i dont want someone to get ahold of the idea and steal it before i can perfect it and submit it to E

...but be looking for a new effect on E :D :D ..if im lucky

There's a nice Paul Harris effect where the "fiz" from one can magically travells to another.

Cheers,

Yeah but i think it looks a bit dodgy if you have to drink a beer and secretly shake up a can behind your back!

Thanks for all yours suggestions! Ive just put some things that i want to get from Ellusionist in my next order into my cart. The total so far is $205....... so im thinking i need to start selling more magic supplies to you kind folks in magicland! Or maybe i need to spend less on beer and barbeques! Nah, never going to happen!!
