Magnets and metaldetectors

Postby PyroSmurf » May 12th, '06, 17:33

Speaking out of not having the slightes clue i just wonder if there is any chanse that magnets will be spottet in metal detectors or the nostealing detectors at shops. Dont want to be standing and explaining what a raven is and why I have it strapt on *sounds dirty*. Especally with my intended audiens in the que behind me.

*did some spelling checking. Dyslexic, had a friend read the post and he did some major editing heheh*

Wow I had never thought of that! I have been wearing my raven for ages I have been in and out of shops with no problem of alarms going off!

I think they only work with special security tags that have electronic chips inside

Ah those metal dectors might go beep, because they are to check for guns and knives

In theory...

Metal detectors use radio waves to react to metal, so if the magnet is small it's not going to create anything like the same return signal as a gun or knife. The detectors in shops induce a current in a coil in the anti-theft tag that then powers up and generates a signal that the detector reads, so you're okay there too.

If the alarm ever does go off by accident and security are snotty with you, state that you have no stolen goods on you and remind them that only a police officer can search you.

The magnets will set off metal detectors, because metal dectors detect any change in magnetic field.

Security detectors, however, work on two different principles. The first one is that the gate has a weak field between the two posts, and this field will cause the tag to start resonating at a specific frequency when it is moved inside of the field. The detectors will pick up on this frequency and the alarm will sound. The pads that deactivate these tags will use magnetism to adjust the frequency emitted, hence making them invisble to the gate. (I have had some cases where mechandise that I bought from one store would set off another's alarm, because they used opposite frequencies for on and off).

The second, newer kind is using RFID technology, which allows to gate to not only detect, but identify the merchandise.

Both of these should not respond to magnets, a fact others have already testified to.

For more info, here is a website that explains a bit more.

At least I get to use my physics knowledge for something productive.

I have had security detectors go off when ive been just carrying my mobile phone or listening to my ipod! i would imagine that metal detectors would go off because they always go off when im wearing a belt at the airport even though the buckle isn't magnetised. if you take a magnet through it will probably go off and you could also get stuck to the machine if its a strong enough magnet!

So we are still down to problems with metal detectors then. Anyone any clues how to go about them. If im just going to a gig its not realy a problem, but lets for sake say that Ive just been at a gig or a friends party and we desided to hit the clubs. Surounded by friends I dont realy want to tell everyone my secret.

beeing a youngster the above senario hapens a lot...

I guess the only way would be to wear a big belt buckle and hide your raven somewhere before you went in that they wouldnt find it in a body search. Maybe in your shoe? Nowhere rude! You dont have to go THAT far to protect your secret! But that way you could just say that your belt set off the alarm. Just a thought.
