Help with Coin in Bottle Trick

Postby Dark-Strider » May 17th, '06, 10:56

Hi, I purchased a 2 fold 2P coin from magic box to do a coin in a bottle trick, but it didnt come with any instructions. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a method using this gimmick. Or PM me a method.

I am a beginner in coin magic so nothing to tricky thanks. :)

Ok let me be more precise as some of you are using sarcasm.

I want to be able to take a spectators coin and make it appear to go through the bottom of the bottle. So I need to know how to secret the gimmick coin and then get it into the bottle, and also how to vanish the spectators coin when I hit it against the bottom of the bottle.

try a french drop or some form of simple put/take. see Bobo's legendary book for more info on this.
as for secreting have it in the neck of the bottle then knock it down when you want it in the bottle.
or get a PK ring or other something similar

The method that Larry has explained is pretty much the standard. Especially if you use a beer bottle or similar that has a label around the neck it should look pretty clean. When you want the coin to go into the bottle do a retention vanish or strike vanish (more visual) and hit the palm of your hand with the bottle. The momentum of the coin will cause it to fall into the bottle, and you can then show that it will not come out.

John Bannon uses the subtlety of grabbing the coin with tweezers and pulling it out of the bottle, then switching it back for the real one. That should leave you pretty clean!

If you have the opportunity, check out Faye Presto's coin in bottle routine.

I'm going to buy Coin in Bottle. Is it best to get a double or single fold coin to do the effect? (I also realise that there will be hours of practice on vanishes as I'm working through Bobo's and DVD's at the moment)

It depends on the size of coin, and the size of bottle you intend to use. Obviously a double folder will be less wide when folded, but for smaller coins and larger bottles a single folder will be sufficient.

Less cuts/folds = less gimmicking so is probably better if it will fit, but larger coins in smaller bottles look more impressive.

Probably best to ask for a demo in a magic shop to see the sizes

Thanks for the info Steverino. I was thinking of doing the trick to mates in the pub so I would use a beer bottle. Which coin would be best for that, 2p, 10p or 50p?

Cheers

You may find that the 2p and 50p have to be double folded, I'm not sure as I don't have these. I'm pretty certain my 10p buttercoin goes into a standard sized beer bottle...

hang on, let me check :)

Gulp... Burp. Well that's one bottle of Leffe that needed drinking anyway

Yep, the 10p buttercoin seems to go in a beer bottle okay.

Are you really sure about that? I mean, wouldn't it be a good idea to check and then double check?

Well I have a crate in the shed. Maybe I should sheck again, after all, perhaps the bottle sizes vary. To be safe I'll need to try them all :) I need something to wash down these cup cakes with.
