I don't think I've ever posted a 'me too' - but here goes...

To impress someone I know (and not close friends, because they don't appreciate it as much), I do an ungimmicked 'ID' type of routine. My patter goes like this:

I had the strangest dream lastnight. It was you and me and we were right here! I asked you to pick out a card from this deck like so (do so) and sure enough you picked a card. Then for some odd reason, I had you put your card in backwards into the deck, face down while I hold the deck face up.. (they do so, didn't see or glimpse the card). When I woke up from this dream, I thought "well wouldn't it be crazy if my dream actually came true.." so I took the nearest deck close to my bed, this pink one.. flipped your card over so I won't forget, and brought it with me. [At this point, I spread the deck face up so only one card is facing down]... Will you slowly pull out your card?

And of course I signed their name on the card, and as they turn it around, they are pleased and amused as it's so personalized. I know this sounds similar to Sankey's Nailed story, but I think it goes over really well.

I both like and dislike gimmicks.

I like them because they allow me to focus just on peformance and not have to worry about my sleights going wrong. But at the same time I feel much more acomplishment after fooling someone with a trick that took a degree of skill.

for school i suggest you do the pen through money/paper...that is the only gimmik i carry around with me because the possibilities and oppertunities are endless. i do a lot of shows and parties so i like to stay clean and use pure slight of hand rather than risk getting caught with a gimmik and ruin the party. But even at parties i can easily say i have made over a thousand dollars in tips using the pen. i show it to someone in the corner and he starts to screem what he has just seen...it is a matter of seconds before half the people in the party pull out their wallets and start waving the bills in the air...specially if they've had a few drinks last week someone at a party give me his wallet and said keep it other than that, the pen falls perfectly in the natural atmosphere of the school as well.

Buy an 8ft rull up straw and put it into a McDonalds bag with a drink.

Take out the contents leaving the straw until last. Then pull out the straw slowly.

Not the hardest trick to do by any stretch of the imagination but with the right timing it's a side splitter.

The thing about performing at school is that you will generally perform surrounded, and your friends will probably hassle you. Thats why its kinda hard to perform in school with gimmicked stuff.

Can I suggest not getting Raven. You have to haul that around with you (I don't have it but) Coin in Soda can is just a coin and a can (I believe) there are always cans around so I would advise that.

I love gimicks too! my Raven goes everywhere with me!

When used sparingly along with "Real non gimicked magic" they are very usefull tools. I allways carry a few packs of normal bikes too, some shell coins, pen through anything, TT, silks etc etc.....

Not to mention an M5, PK ring.

This way I can usually pull of a quick "WOW" trick in most situations
