Allen! How dare you give these guys the older materals we try to keep secret  (you left out Hellstromism by Nelson, btw)

The Shantz book is one of my favorites and features itself rather strongly in a book of mine that's coming out in the early fall of this year (The Complete Psychic Technologies Collection -- available through Loren Tindall). It is between this and some of Eddie Joseph's material that I was able to create one of the more powerful "Promotional Shows" I do for working Fairs, Shopping Malls and so forth.

For those new to this field, the Shantz book will offer you "cheats" that can be used as you are developing your skill as an MR operator.

Another resource, though I don't recommend it until you've gotten familiar with MR work, is Cassidy's MESSING AROUND -- it will give you both, an historic perspective on Wolf Messing as well as a trick based method for replicating some of what he did using MR... again, a great means by which to cheat as you learn.

Muscle Reading.

:) Sorry Craig. My head hangs low.
In lieu, I shall of course recommend your book to all ADVANCED & EXPERIENCED Mentalists :D
I hope you agree that it's better to put someone on the right trail (eg. Schatz who takes you through it in a decent learning format) rather than let the boggle eyed, ham fisted amateurish (as opposed to true amateur) magician blunder & flounder, his way through and probably expose whatever he does in the process.
The Tipton creed in my latest lecture(The Secrets Behind The The Magic) is 'Think like a pro.Learn to PERFORM your effects not just let them off!'
We can but try.
Keep smiling. :P

This is an extract from rather a long PM but some may find it useful.

Something that may improve your hit rate is (assuming three objects) discarding the one you know it isn't (esp. if the target is an end object, you'll know it isn't the one at the other end quite quickly). So discard the "definitely not" object and spread out the other two a bit more. That spread increases my hit rate when I'm not sure. It also helps convince them I know what I'm doing and my feeling is that the signals then improve because they have some faith in what's going on and take it more seriously.

If the target is the centre object and they are standing to your right, you'll often still get a "definitely not" off the left one.

Another thing is to introduce a bit of vertical separation. Once I've discarded the "definitely not" I'll push the right hand object up a bit as I separate it and pull the left hand one down a bit. It gives me another impulse to react to.

Because of that I'd rather have objects I can separate, so numbers on cards that can be removed or spread out instead of numbers on paper. I can do it on paper but it's nicer to have moveable stuff.

Something else I do is make sure that the spec is close enough not to have to stretch or bend, so I'm dealing with the same platform (body position) in each case. Then I don't mistake stretching, however slight, for resistance.

Re feeling the pulse - some specs assumed that I was reading their pulse rate as I moved over the card/object they had chosen. I wasn't, of course, but it was one attempt at rationalisation. Given that in one case her hand was resting on my wrist this would have been quite some feat!

Anyway I'm just an amateur but I have a village shop so get plenty of people to practise on. Good luck!

 You brought up the pause reading thing and it reminded me of something...

A rather noted individual that's proficient at MR actually BSed his way through with a handful of college students one evening by agreeing with one about using the pulse.

Long story short he had items "thought of" on a table and had the sending to one side and a 2nd person to the other, who felt his pulse... he insisted that he wouldn't say a word but that this #2 person would be able to identify the object in this manner... sure enough, she did!

IN all simplicity & truth, he tracked down which object was being transmitted by #1 and simple slowed and stoped his pulse whenever the hand moved over that item.

It freaked both, the sender and the "reciever" out in that he served only as a kind of conduit.

It's something you might want to play with in that it's a bit different.

Just found a cheaper source for pendulums than that posted above:

4Witches Occult Shop

http://www.4witches.com/product_info.ph ... cts_id=373

They have 4 nice ones for £ 7.99

It's run by a friend of mine in the village and she's v reliable and quick.

Speaking of pendulums: Richard Webster has a book - "Pendulum Power
For The Psychic Entertainer", which I've ordered, but it hasn't arrived yet, available at:
http://www.deceptionary.com/webster.html#pendulum

Bob Cassidy also has a book on the pendulum - "Pendulum of Fate" where he teaches an interesting way of using the pendulum. He also covers some of the history of pendulum use and dowsing, along with a few other effects. I wasn't too blown away by the last few effects in the book - but I guess in this case it's all about presentation.

I just use the simpletricks with my pendulum, and the pendulum its self only took about 2 minutes to make :D Is there much differnce in pendulums? Like do ones you buy have differnt effects or something? I found 2 fairly heavy metal balls and taped them to the end of a piece of string, and then painted everything black and it works good..i think :?

You're hitting on a touchy subject here... at least, if you were talking to professional dowsers it would be.

From a show biz point of view, having a nice pendulum or two is a good thing. I like allowing the patron to choose the one that "talks" to them just to personalize things more. Of course, I have several to choose from and depending upon the situation I might even use a piece of their own jewelry.

There are "dowser's pendulums" that unscrew so that a billet or article can be set into it, kind of like giving a bloodhound the scent of something to follow and track down. I know of a few that use this for looking for hidden treasures or lost people and they are rather successful at it. I believe Bro. Shadow was offering just such a device a few years ago that was quite elegant.

One thing to consider, when it comes to the "trick" side of this topic, if you have a Pendulum that's made of Hemitite or has a Hemitite bead next to the top, you can manipulate it with a PK Ring or more tradition PK styled device.

The Cassidy notes are most interesting and I love the Horzontal Pendulum idea but I think the Webster material will give you a bit more "meat" when it comes to basic Pendulum Scrying methods. You might also check out Loren Tindall's Pendulum Reading tic-sheet sets, they are quite good.

Do you know of any beginner/intermediate books on mentalism and muscle reading that I (a thirteen year old) could understand well?
Thanks,
-C

The best learning tool I've found is Banchek's Psi DVD Volume 3.

If it has to be a book, then Psychophysiological Thought Reading (Banachek) would do fine, but it's better to see him do it than just read about it.

The Banachek DVD mentioned above has a companion book (mentioned above) and I personally recommend them both... but, now comes lecture time... 8)

Muscle Reading is not "a trick" it is a method and it can be a bloody miracle IF YOU are willing to work with it and make it that miralce rather than selling it short and presenting it as something cool you do along with your sponge bunnies. I'm saying this for two important reasons; your age (and thus, inexperience) and for the benefit of all others reading this post.

My fathers step-dad was a for real Dowser and it was from him that I was introduced to the whole ideomotor idea; how to use pendulums, water witching, etc. I've used these tools "ignorant" of the science behind it for decades and known tremendous success with it and came to know even greater success as I came to know more about actual MR work and so forth. It was however this "ignorance" that lent me a potent advantage in how I demonstrated this skill in that I never saw it in the same light as I saw my magic tricks, to me it was something real that demanded respect and wasn't to be abused e.g. I only demonstrated it on special ocassions... when someone lost something, etc.

I know, as a young magic enthusiast the first thing you want to do is show off a new bit but do yourself a favor and play this down, you won't regret it! Once you are familiar with it and have managed to get good at it then you can start simple bits and sucking your chums into the game, as it were.

If you want to gain the upper hand with this let me know once you've gotten comforable with the basic principle and I'll give you some ideas as to how to get the ball rolling in a way that retains teh intrigue of this wonderful technique.

THanks Craig, I will definitley get both for a good summers read.
Although I did know that muscle reading is not a trick (believe me I do my research before I spend money) I do know that it takes years of practise just to get a good hold on it, and many years more to master. I am one of those persons who will learn it through practise, and won't show to friends, well, because I don't like to show magic to them. thanks again for the post, and I will definitely contact you when I am ready (which will be 7 or 8 months).
