Magic abuse

Postby Mahoney » May 24th, '06, 14:42

Oh dear oh dear. I go out with pockets packed full of card and gizmos. Drink makes me fearless. Too fearless. I end up wondering over and sort of just about squeeze a trick out. "You will watch, and you will be entertained!". That's what it's like. It is terrible.

I went out last night. I ended up trying to tell this girl her name. For some reason the name Danielle seemed so alien too me. I couldn't read her handwriting in my thought transmitter. Ended up trying to basically guess her name for 5 minutes. I didn't get it right. And all this was just after a friend said "this is the next Derren Brown!" Nice. Needless to say she was blown away by the trusty ID! But the amount of girls who said "Queen of hearts" was amazing. NEVER attempt any mind reading style things ever ever ever when you've been drinking!!

Yes drunken magic. It is awful. I don't think I give my tricks enough respect when I go out. Magic is so hard drunk. Mind you. I did do ambitious card for this one girl *goes to get signed playing card* called Tess. Now I have done that routine so many times. I don't even have to think about it. I must say however, the venue let me down. It was too noisy.

I tried to stop some peoples watches but as you might have guessed, they did not feel like handing over their watch to a drunken loonatic. One of them said "what are you going to do, make it disappear?". I don't know but people just don't seem to warm to me (and so not really the magic either) when I'm drunk. Little do they know, I'm actually a very nice person! :) I think that my approach (if you can call it an approach!) is obviously wrong. Also I don't wait for a good time to do the magic, like in the que. No no, I wait till I'm inside and then try and show them something they dont want to see.

But I don't know I mean how would you react to this guy shouting "pick a carrrrd":

Especially when he's just stuck a straw in your hair...

You know I don't think she even noticed me do it. I just walked over and stuck it in. hehe.

Some lessons, that might sound very obvious but I must certainly try harder to stop.

NEVER do any mentalism/mental magic (whatever we are calling it now) kind of stuff. Presentation is very hard when they cannot hear what you are saying. It just does not work.

Just stop doing any magic well before you start putting straws in peoples hair.

Stick to silly tricks. You won't create any lasting memories anyway, especially when they are all drunk! Biting coins, cigarettes in coins, and self working tricks are the only things you should try.

Magic is too good to be abused in this way.

Alcohol and magic DO NOT MIX.

Hahahahaha, thank you for a very ammusing post Mahoney, however I do sympathise with you. Alcohol does give you too much courage sometimes! I have had simmilay experiances where in the middle of a card trick I have either forgotten which trick I was doing or I have forgotten the speccys card! Dohhh.....

I made my wife dissapear just by arguing with her!!!

I went camping a couple of years ago, doing some simple close up while I was there. They had a party in a hall, which involved lots of alcohol.

I went out for a smoke, where some of the children started wanting to see some more magic. I knew it wouldn't be a good idea to do any in my condition.

Then I ruined it all by telling them I used to be able to do a backflip when I was younger.

So I tried, forgetting that at the time, I was 38, not 18.

I managed half a one, landed head first, feet straight up.

There were people about 20 feet away that heard the thud.

Yes, I had a headache the next day!!!!

I have a great trick/prank performed in a party.
Well, I ain't much of a prank but still, follow on ;)
When going at that party, I knew I would be called to perform some magic, so I took my precaution and didn't drink any alchool (yeah, I already had my lesson too) but still, I carried a beer bottle around, filled with water en happily drank from it and refilling it about 4-5 times. Then, everyone were enjoy themself and one of them asked for a magic thingy. I tried to "refuse", pretending I was to drunk for it, but they began grouping around me and, you know, getting pressure on me. So I said: "Well, I don't know how this will turn out, I just learned it today, but let's give it a try!" I then performed "Needle Trough Arm" perferctly with that extra blood effect, pretending I've messed up because I was drunk...
Some girls their won't even drink again!
Aaaaaaaah, great night!

Sorry guys.... given the topic I think I have to participate!!! I actually found out that performing magic when I'm (mildly) drunk makes it appear much more natural and entertaining to you.... maybe it's because you don't really care about what you're doing and if you do some simple sleights they usually come out natural.
I've never attempted doing it when I'm totally crashed though.
Should that ever happen I'll let you know first thing!!
Cheers

I like the story, but it sounds exactly the same as what happens to me.......... only im the one who ends up with a straw in their hair.

I've been performing magic drunk before and the only trick i could remember is a bit of a mind reading, injog force basic simple trick. Luckily everyone else was wasted as well though so i got away with it.

I can also do fire tricks quite well when im drunk...... like making a flaming shot of sambuca disappear infront of everybodys eyes! Or the incredible Shrinking Cigarette every so often.

I was born with Multiple Personality Disorder. Luckily, they are all me, they just dont always get along...

Or, if you want to appear as the greatest magician/mind reader ever, the next day (provided everyone was sufficiently drunk) you could go "Hey, how cool was it last night when I told that bartender the birthday of his Australian friend WHISLT making that table float out of the windows? That was pretty good, wasn't it?!"

And they'll never know :D.
