10 th TOP SECRET MAGIC DAY - bedford

Postby foz » Jun 5th, '06, 11:03

Went to this on sunday ...long day - 9.30am to 10.30pm

lectures in day were:
MARTIN SANDERSON
IMO good lecture done some good useful routines ...and explained methods and ideas quite well.Good ideas for signed bill to kiwi...

RUSS STEVENS
Not that great...spent time explaining card manipulation and flash products .....seemed almost like the hour long lecture was made up in 5 mins...

MARC OBERON
Good opening done some very nice tricks....then lectured on some very simple stuff...mentalism ideas.
Ended with a demo of a trick he was selling the key ring trick...no method explained....
But that was easy to work out IMO.

JOHN LENAHAN
By far the most entertaining and showed some very basic tricks but good handling which improves on the way you may already do the trick.
This was the best lecture as he has a very good persona and hes approach in teaching was good.

The day ended with a show...including some of the above.

Marc oberon done an ultra violet light show .....very visual and well done.....not totally magic but very impressive stuff.

john lenehan done hes style of magic....which again is fairly basic magic....but he is very entertaining and makes it look easy to pull of some fairly simple magic and give it a bigger impact than you would expect.....as said i think its hes persona that wins through.

duncan trillo ....done very traditional magic......silks and card manilulations...he did it well....but i think he had a hard time....as he had a theatre half full of magicians...and he was making silks vanish with the faithful TT....that said i`m sure he earns well with this act.

russ stevens ...done card manipulations and some rope stuff and the cardboard box with lady in and wooden spikes....
All done okay.....some slips...but most would`nt notice.

alec powell....comedy magic..(tommy cooper style..)
very entertaining and went down very well IMO.......not much actual magic ....but just amusing.
Stuff was going wrong and he`d just pick up the prop and throw it across the stage in frustration....
One of the better acts...(just for entertainment value..)

vizage ...finish show...
They where okay....basic big stage effects...
etc the cage is empty.... cover up ..uncover ..girl appears.
bolt girl in frame ...put box on head...remove head...

Thats the sort of stuff that was done.....the girl sings in the act and they probaly go done well to laypeople at holiday camps...and theatres as an allround entertainment act.

The crowd was probaly a tuff one as said most were magians that were there for the lectures.....so there were times the acts were almost asking for applause.

All in all a good day was had....but was totally knackered afterwards.

Totally knackered afterwards? I am still knackered now! It was a very good day though. John Lenehan shone for me more than anyone else. I remember him briefly from TV appearances, and although his lecture explained stuff that I do already, and often, his humour and presentation were top.

Enjoyed his tale about the little mermaid show in florida. Sorry, cant repeat it here!

My only slight dissapointment was the number of dealers. Thought there would have been more than there were. Still spent £65 though...

And another thing, John Lenehan Lecture notes £2.50! The best £2.50 spent on the day without a doubt. And he happily signed them!

Especially as a pint of Red Stripe was £2.60!

It was also mentioned in the EVENTS forum. You see it is always worth checking these things out.

Thanks for the review Foz. It was a great day. I always feel these days are as much fun from the social side of things as much as anything else. It's always good catching up with friends from around the country.

As with Foz, the highlight for me in the lecture and evening show was John Lenahan. What a star he is. Duncan Trillow was a rare treat too.

All in all a great day out.
