I agree, the videos are very good.

But if you already own the Harris books, the Art of Astonishment 1-3, then the videos will possibly be nothing new.

Most of the effects on the videos on Penguin are recognisable (to me, anyway) from the books.

Although, a lot of people will argue that the videos are better because it's an easier way to learn - the books themselves are a joy to own and read - as the eccentric and quirky fashion in which they are written is quite entertaining - without the bonus that they're filled with some of the most creative effects 'you ever did see'.

But, as far as it goes, Paul Harris is one mighty fine and slightly off-beat performer, and the videos would be highly recommended to anyone.

Do the methods and handling come across well in the books?

Yes - absolutely

Instructions are clear with good illustrations which clear up any doubts. There are so many good routines here (Reset is my favourite so far - I am still on the first book after 3 weeks!). It is fantastic value for money and you will not regret getting the set! I have read in other forums that Book 1 is out of print so don't miss out on a great opportunity to learn some very cool effects

Cliff sums it up...

The books are superb, and very entertaining to read. The illustrations are clear and informative. Although some of it is DEFINATELY not for the faint-hearted... there's some pretty advanced stuff in there.

Book 1 is published by a different publisher to books 2 and 3 (L&L, I think) and is vanishing fast.

The quality and feel of these books makes them worth every penny - as they house some of the most off-beat and useable effects around.

If the videos are on the same level - they would be worth it too - but I wouldn't see a necessity to buy both - this is an either/or exercise.
