What I mean by this is there is a guy at my work and he is also a magician I guess. People think he is better then me because all he uses is gaffed cards and coins, Like the bite through coin and cigarette through card. Flash paper, The Raven etc.... Every single thing I do is sleight of hand with a deck of cards except for twisted sister and aces in their faces.

But people always come up to me and say how did he put the pencil through that card or cigarette through the coin, and it drives me nuts lol. He doesnt give me any credit at all. He doesnt know about sleight of hand at all. He couldnt do a doublt lift or the pass if his life depended on it. I would have alot more respect for him if he gave me credit for my sleight of hand but he doesnt. Anyway maybe its time I start ordering some packet tricks haha.

This is an important lesson to learn. The spectators see the effect, whereas you as the performer sees the cause. So all you have to do is come up with an effect that blows their socks off... and him out of the water

Indeed, they don't think about the skill it takes to learn sleight of hand. Just what the effect looks like

I was thinking about getting that but its pretty expensive however it might be worth it.

Maybe Ill do the trick Keith Barry did on his show when they pickedd 3 cards in 3 differnet decks and they were all the king of diamonds. I did that at a resteraunt once and it got a great reaction. Of corse I do my own variation with my own forces because I have no idea how he did his lol but none the less it makes for a very good trick.

If you get the opportunity to stand next to him when he has a gimmicked deck and you have a normal deck, challenge him to a 'do as I do' competition and then see him squirm

Just to play devils advocate, maybe you need to look at the presentation of your effects... The thing about sleights is that they are meant to go undetected, therefore the speccys won't see the hard work that you've put in just the effect (well said Tomo). Therefore think about how you can make the things you're doing more effective by presenting them differently.

Also why turn it into a competition, can't you work together?

erm......... again I'm bringing the time machine into it but its actually not a bad price now.

If you look on a very well known auctions site (not sure if i say the name that would be advertising?) and search for "magic watch" or "time machine" you can get it at quite a good price now.

Well, I know you can get it a lot cheaper than I bought it for...............DOH!

No we cant work together because hes an asshole. Ive tried to be nice to him but hes one of those guys where he has to be the best at everything so there for he absolutely hates me because even though he wont addmitt it he knows I am better. But w/e Im going to get the time machine and do that.
and P.s LMAO Dat that is hilarious hahaha. Thats how I think too. That is so clever. Im going to do that next time when he is using his svengali or that c*** (not the best) Omini deck or what ever its called lol. Ooooooooh magic is such a crazy thing isnt it haha.

BY the way I love you guys Yay :D You give good advice.

FYI teh time machine is selling for a very good price on http://www.magicbox.uk.com

On the gimmick thing, there is nothing wrong with them im my opinion. Although I certaily wouldn't want to do all gimmicked stuff. It's just that when I think of all the gimmick effects, there is so much scope. Bite out coin, for example, is an amazing effect. There is no way you could do that without the gimmick (if there is I would love to know ;)).

But eventually this guy will run out of gimmick tricks and he'll have nothing left.

In which case old bean, get yourself something that compliments your superior sleights. Play to your strengths if your good at sleights get something that utilises them, that way your rival will never be able to compete without practicing. For example a gaff deck like the ghost/tiger gaff. These enhance alot of card sleights, but are pretty useless if you can't do the sleights in the first place...

On the other hand, don't let him get under your skin, let him just get on with it and you get on with your thing. Mahoney rightly points out he will eventually run out of stuff and that both gimmicks and slieghts have a place in magic. 8)
