It's so sad... I am american as well, and me and all my friends do this all the time! 
This is a vid. of my bro with his propane-powered spudzuka. <- That thing launch a potato like 1/4 mile away, maybe more!
If you get really bored, you can make them with a soda bottle and the center part of a pen, or if you want it alittle bigger, use a cocktail juice bottle, and a paper towel tube... just burn a small hole in the back of the bottle with a lighter, spray some hairspray in there, and lite it!
