What's The Next Step...?

Postby Lucifer » Oct 23rd, '03, 23:56

Hey everyone :D
I was going to do a review as my first post but id need something to review first... which brings me onto my question.

Q1 I know a few card forces and fake shuffles along with a few good tricks, but as a novice, can someone suggest a great book to learn a few sleights & card forces as well as fake shuffles from...?

Q2 If you were to list a few great tricks for me to get, what would they be? I'm already ordering a svengali deck, stripper deck and a few packs of bicycle cards along with The Xpert and In A Flash , What’s a few of your best/favourite tricks...?

Q3 Last but not least what’s a few peoples favourite online magic shop to order from...? Cheapest & best quality.

Hey thanks in advance!! I look forward to seeing what you have to say about this. :)

welcome to the board
firstly id say dont worry about being a novice, there are a lot of novices on this board (myself included) as well as some VERY experienced pro's.

to answer your questions....
1) Royal road to card magic is the standard answer for card stuff, as a starter and pretty much all round guide for card work its awesome

2) this one is trickier as not everyone likes the same stuff... for an easy to do card effect that has an awesome ending try "the Hitman" from penguinmagic.com its cheap and easy to master

3) well there are many online shops not least of all is our very own emagictricks.co.uk, which offers a massive range of goods at very competitive prices  also there are others but I'm not going to mention them... heh heh

Computer games don't affect kids; I mean if Pac-Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching magic pills and listening to repetitive electronic music. - Kristian Wilson, Nintendo, Inc, 1989..

hi lucifer, and welcome to the board

whilst i agree with mog about the royal road to card magic, dont underestimate the power of DVD's, i bought the royal road and have found it indeed awesome as suggested, however sometimes the slieghts and shuffles can get a little hard to follow, well for me anyway, so i bought some DVD's and found watching to learn a great deal easyier then reading to learn, A PICTURE SPEAKS A THOUSAND WORDS and all that. Anyway just my view on that.

:D :D :D

Ok here's my take on your questions.

1. I agree with Mog, the standard classic is "Royal road to card Magic"

2. I'd get busy reading the reviews thread.
One that I've been getting great reactions to and is under a fiver is the disappearing card case. You will find a full review in the reviews section.

3. I like emagic tricks ( just spent another £70 this week  )
though a very useful site is http://www.bargainmagic.co.uk/

This site compares the prices from a range of good magic sites including emagictricks.

Sweet, hey thanks you lot yeah! :)

the_mog I just looked at the hitman it looks perfect and royal road to card magic got some rave reviews so il be ordering that!

I think your totally right about the DvD idea silver shadow if a picture speaks a thousand words then a DvD must be a few dictionary's full.

http://www.bargainmagic.co.uk/ Has to be the best idea for a magic site!!! Thank you Happy Toad

Has any one had any 'Trouble' with any online magic shops...?

Take it easy. :D

I personally haven't other than buying tricks that sound great but are either unpractical, just not very good, or require far more skill than I have, despite a rating that suggests otherwise.

The single best way around this is to check out the reviews and if there isn't one then ask. I am also fortunate to have a magic shop about 30 mins away, this enables me to see a trick I'm interested in performed and find out how it works, which is even more helpful in making a decision.

Another way, is using the "For sale" posts and getting your magic much cheaper, then if all else fails you can re-sell and get most and maybe all your money back.

Hope that helps.

Having ordered from a wide variety of on-line sources both in the UK and USA, I can say they have all been very good indeed. Service is swift, help is always avalaible and, if you have any problems, a polite phone call to the suppliers usually gets it sorted.

I agree with Royal Road being a good starting point or perhaps a Jay Sankey DVD.

Try combining other tricks though as some people bore of just seeing card tricks whilst others won't so to keep everyone in your audience happy perform a few card tricks and some self working or simple to do tricks.

A good way to end your card routines would be EXIT 51 available from Ben Harris at www.wowbound.com ABSOLUTELY GREAT WAY TO FINISH CARD ROUTINES..... I will write a review once I've mastered it.
