Cling Rings

Postby Happy Toad » Oct 18th, '03, 15:46

Effect:

Show two metal Rings, hold one and touch second ring to it and it will cling as if magnitised, spin second ring around, then pass the rings to spectator who will not be able to get them to stick together. You could of course have blown the magnetism out just before handover, if you desire.

Price around £4, have seen it as little as £2

Difficulty level 1/5

Not a major effect, more of a puzzle. Can also be done with borrowed coins.
No one I've done this with has been blown away, but they have been puzzled and spent some minutes examining the rings trying to figure if a certain part of it is magnetised, only to discover it isn't.

To my mind it's fairly obvious how it's done but in most cases it hasn't been guessed.

Ok, well you can borrow a couple of shiny new 1-2 pence coins take one coin in your left hand between your finger and thumb, perhaps a 2 pence coin, then take the 1 pence coin and hold the top edge against the bottom edge of the 2p, it clings, you now give it a flick with your finger and it will spin. Pass the coins back and they will not be able to repeat it, finding the coins will not stick together.

That any help?

Not sure if this is exactly the same thing, but www.emagictricks.co.uk do something that looks similar called "Psychic Spinning Ring"

yes thats it.... the effect can also be done with a "neo TT" which used to be available from emagictricks but i couldnt find it just now

Hmm Mog, I prefer the way Cling Rings does it. No need for the TT, esp as this is done very close up, with the spec staring at your hand. Not saying it can't be done but it's a real doddle with just the necessary bit of the gimmick.

I found the neo TT a bit obvious for this one because the focus is right there... I found it a little difficult to successful misdirect, and to be honest - it's so easy with out the TT

In saying that - I did try up covering "it" up with some of Yankee Tom's Liquid Skin. Which although I thought was a good idea wasn't very successful.

Doing it with borrowed coins sounds like a good idea though. Don't the 2p's have to be before/after a special year?

If I remember right, the magic date is 1993 onwards - or thereabouts. Don't shoot me if I'm wrong though!

Yea if you borrow the coins you may need to do a switch, if there are some obviously shiny new ones, then this solves the problem, just choose them.

you use shinny new ones because you dont want people to think that the years of dirt and grime allow the coins to stick to each other
