Folding Coin help!

Postby BizKiTRoAcH » Jun 18th, '06, 01:37

I bought a folding coin from magictricks.co.uk a few weeks ago and i've been practising the coin in bottle. Getting it out of the bottle was the hardest part and in the process I seem to have messed up the coin. I cant take pics, at least not today, but one of the folding edges has dinted in and I dont need to right now, but I wont be able to replace a new rubber band from the looks of it. I'm just wondering whats the best way to fix this dent, I cant think of anything thin and strong enough to bend it back up a bit :(

Hi

A small knife blade inserted into the groove and wiggled a bit should do the trick. I'm always having to 'reshape' the cut edges as they're very thin and tend to bend on the way out of the bottle.

Hope that helps.

You're welcome. It's worth keeping a small penknife in your close up kit - I've got one specifically for doing just this (along with bands and the assorted paraphenalia I've acquired over the years to clean out the grooves in next to no time!).

Glad to have helped.

I had some like that. The only real solution for that type is to put them in the bin or keep them as emergency back-ups!

hm werid. when ever i try doing coin in bottle. the band likes to break more. i rather stick with the other trick that you can do with the folding coin. with the teeth i mean :D

The bands do break, and quickly! Especially if the bottle's had red wine in it! That seems to have a rapid corrosive effect on the band! The plus side is that they always break on the way out rather than the way in!

If I get two goes out of one coin before re-banding, I'm happy. If doing a gig and it's in that days repertoire then I'll always have at least two of each type on me and ready to go, usually three.

this may or may not work.. but if you are at a party and someone finishes with a bottle, ask them to wash it out with water and you can say something like "If I hit the glass too hard and it breaks, I dont want to be covered in red wine do I?"

Or if you arent telling them what the trick is, just wash it yourself, let them examine it and then just do the trick and say that after the trick

I've heard of people who do this but, for me, I think it seems a bit suspect and, to the lay person, a tad illogical, plus it can kill the moment. I feel it's far more impressive to use that bottle they've just finished with (so they know it's not prepared) and present them with a mind blowing trick. The bands are gonna break regularly, you just have to accept it! They're consumables and don't last long, just like flash paper!

Some people commented on the bands breaking - it's an obvious point, but just in case someone missed it, you can put more than one band around a folding coin. I use a double cut 50p for a John Bannon Coin in Bottle idea, and it has 2 bands around it - should one break, it stays together. Having the second band also makes the removal of the coin (in the Bannon Version) look great.

Liam.

Michael Ammar does a great coin-in-bottle in his lecture notes and it doesnt require a folding coin! Id highly recomend it for pros

Good point Montz, I forgot to mention to always put two bands on. I even put two on cig thru's and the like as a form of insurance.
