Childrens Show part one

Postby Miles More Magic » Jun 21st, '06, 22:28

This and part two, I posted on another forum, but I though it might be of interest.

I had my son with me for 1/2 term.

Between us, we tweaked with the script, then the act, after each performance rehearsal.

After previous performances, I decided that my son would be in charge of the setting up/changing of the props, while I concentrated on the show.

We practiced together, but also apart, so we could identify problems.

Instead of having a stage full of big props, which take too long to perform, we now have 1 box which keeps everything in.

In the past, there have been more adults than children at the shows we have done. This is because it has been for a group that I have known for years and wanted to support me.
all very well, but the problem is, I was trying to perform adult magic and small illusions, instead of performing to the children.

Everything has changed. I have a show for them, where the adults will be in a separate meeting, so I will at last be performing for children.
I have made it clear, I am to be included in the programme, as a childrens entertainer, not magician.

So, we have had the script, are 110% happy with what we are performing.
Are having fun with the routine, Practiced the performance, including where everything is going to be, and when.
We are both very confident at the moment. OK, nerves might get to us when we start, but there is less chance than normal.

You see, we have both found the thing that was missing.

It has come by going through everything above.

It has come by looking how bad we were in a previous video.

The must have item?

We both have BELIEF.

We KNOW we have changed the show, to make it FUN.

We don't have to try to prove anything, because we are going to be enjoying the show as much as the children.

Yes, it sounds big headed.
Yes, it could all go very wrong.

As it is a camping meet, there is no way to tell how many, or what age, children will be there.

So what!!

We KNOW we can give a show whatever.

I feel very lucky.

To have the belief and to be enjoying it so much, is beyond words.

Oh, and I will be doing close up throughout the weekend.

Same children on site all the time, so have to have LOTS of other stuff.

Not too good on sleights, so yes, guilty to using gimmicks.

However, doing lots of non magic stuff to keep me, I mean them, amused.
